Asus Voltage tweak 5870/5850

If I was buying a 5870, this would be the card I'd get. I enjoy overclocking and adjustable voltage is exactly what, IMO, all graphics cards should have.

That is true, the problem though is that there are so many retards, that would increase that voltage like crazy and damage the cards, generating a wave of rmas that would really create problems for the videocards companies. So this is why it isn't widely spread and just a couple of companies and some particular cards, have this feature.
 
Sweet baby Jesus :shocked: That's like a Turbo mode. The HD5870 will go to 1035 and the HD5850 to 1050Mhz! :shocked: "Up to 38% faster" will completely blow everything else away 😀
 
Yeah, if their 5850 is $259 like the rest, it will really be a popular card. 1GHz on the GPU should help make up for some of the nerfed aspects of the GPU (slightly reduced shaders and TMUs), and of course the memory from 4000 to 5200 will certainly help a lot more than the 5870s jump from 4800 to 5200...overclocked to those numbers, the ASUS 5850 should definitely outperform stock 5870s.
 
an extra 38% on a 5870 would make SLI GTX285 laughable. Not that it already isn't -_-

Get an aftermarket cooler and you have a BEAST! Take that, Crysis!

Funny thing is, you probably won't need an aftermarket cooler 🙂.
 
The fan speed on the 5870 runs REALLY low even on full load which troubles me. My GTX 285 used to run in 80Cs. The CPU fan also throttled up from 30% to the low 60 range all this while. Running Crysis would throttle the fan up to the 70% range (and temp would still be about 85C).

According to the CCP, the 5870 gets up to 65C at full load playing Crysis VH 1080p w/ 8XAA, and the fan doesn't ramp up beyond 30%! This scares the crap out of me and I seriously think the temps are under reported by their sensors.

You're funny. AMD would let their cards run to hot on purpose, so they get a lot of rma's, yet can claim it's not very loud?

I've allready been using asus cards and I got a HD 5870 up to 1025/1250MHz with 1,4V. There's a possibility I could use less volts. The memory didn't seem to like going much higher though... Also, a stable overclock doesn't necesarily mean a fast overclock, because of the ram with it's error reporting function.
 
No hardware difference. The reason you can up the voltage is because of the bios. If you flash ANY HD 5870 or HD 5850 with the respective Asus bios, you could up the voltage using smartdoctor, or MSI's afterburner. There have been some problems btw, with a certain bios not working with a certain version of smartdoctor, but it should have been fixed.

You should be able to grab a asus bios of the net and use atiflash to flash your xxx-brand HD 5870 or HD 5850. All current HD 5800-cards are reference design anyways.
