Asus Vivobook 13" has block covering the RAM?!

Just picked up an Asus Vivobook 13" with i5-4200U from Best Buy. $600, not bad. Was gonna throw an SSD and an extra 4GB of RAM in it and be happy... but Asus solders a metal brick over the RAM slots. WTF?!

I can see the slots under the brick - it's upgradable, not soldered on. Why the hell would Asus of all companies pull something like this? I assume they want people to pay for their upgrades or void the warranty, but Best Buy doesn't even sell an 8GB model.

I did some digging around and found the HP ProBook 430 G1 as an alternative, about the same price on Newegg - $618+shipping. Upgradable RAM and HD, better battery life at 8.5 hrs, and Haswell. Only prob is the $617 config (at Newegg) comes with a blog slow i3-4010U.

There's an upgraded model with i5-4200U (which critically features Turbocore) that'd be perfect except that Newegg wants an extra $150 for it, which sounds like highway robbery considering the two chips have the same tray price on ARK. If the upgrade included even a 128GB SSD I'd be ok with it, but an extra $150 just for Turbocore? No thanks.

So: anyone know where I can find the G1 with 4200U for closer to $650? Or something equivalent in size and either shipping with 8GB memory or upgradable to 8GB? Integrated SSD would be great, but prob not an option at this price range.

What do you need the extra 4GB of RAM for? And how does a metal block over the RAM slots prevent you from upgrading the HDD?

Erm... the metal block prevents me from upgrading the ram, not the HD. And my workload is a mix of web design, IT, SEO, and photo/video work (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, AfterEffects).

Wow, I was actually looking to buy that Asus with the i5-4200u 2 weeks ago but figured from past versions, they had the RAM soldered-in. Guess I was partially right in that this time its not soldered in, but theres a metal plate soldered over the slot (LOL wut?)

Anyways, if you're not averse to going to a slightly larger 14" laptop, Best Buy sells the Lenovo U430 Touch laptop with:

- Core i5-4200u
- 4GB DDR3 RAM (1 stick in a regular single DIMM slot so you can upgrade it to 8GB single-channel...I am 85% sure its upgradable)
- has a 2.5" HDD/SSD slot I believe which you can upgrade...only the slimmer 7mm drives fit though
- Also has an mSATA slot I believe, so you can pop in a 256GB mSATA SSD as your boot drive and keep the stock 500GB hybrid HDD/SSD drive as-is for media storage.
- Has a 14" 1600x900 (better res that the standard 1366x768 res) screen which is OK color/contrast-wise (its a TN screen) but also does Touchscreen.

I like the design of it (most of the body is metal) and it feels nice. I had one for a week but ultimately returned it since I want a laptop with an IPS screen. However if everything else about it was great (Lenovo make pretty good keyboards) etc. Worth a look at your Local Best Buy if you are interested. Sells for $680.

Not bad, high res screen would be nice but it's a bit pricey for not having nearly the battery life or as durable construction as the ProBook. Still, the 4200u is a significant upgrade. Am I just trying to have my cake and eat it too at this price point?

Ugh. That is seriously bad. Deal breaker. Not gonna do business with a company that behave like that. Thanks for heads up.

Normally I'd agree, and expect that crap from a company like HP or maybe Dell to push their online upgrade profits harder. But Asus? That's like being betrayed by an old friend. ANd pushign me into the arms of HP in the process. Sad day.

Hmm, isn't ASUS more on the periphery with regards to laptops and viewed moreso as a "budget brand" than the kingpins such as Dell, HP, or Lenovo?
