I'm looking for a new 13'' notebook to replace my current 15'' Core 2 Duo Vaio from 2008.
It needs to be
-light, as I'll be taking it to college and work,
-fast for current and future apps,
-capable of light gaming (play 1-4 year old games at 720p with reasonable framerate)
-have a nice build quality, as I'll probably keep it for a few years,
-have a reasonably good keyboard/touchpad (even if not best in class),
-have good battery life (by good I mean 4-5+ hours of wifi browsing + mixed apps use)
I have a quite fast desktop computer with a quad-core i7, 12GB RAM and a GTX680, so gaming is not my primary concern (I'd just like to be able to play some games occasionally).
The Sony Vaio Z I'm looking for is the entry-level model:
- Core i5 3210M (2C/4T 2.5GHz/3.1GHz stock)
- 8GB DDR3-1600
-2x 64Gb SSDs in RAID0
-HD4000 Graphics
-13.1'' Full HD (non IPS) screen with 96% RGB color gammut
-2.58 lbs
Then there's the UX32VD
- Core i7 3517U (2C/4T 1.9GHz/3.0GHz stock).
- 4GB DDR3
- 500Gb HDD + 24/32GB SSD cache
-NVIDIA GT620M graphics
-13.3'' Full HD (IPS) screen
-3.2 lbs
The price difference lets me upgrade the UX32VD to a 256Gb SSD + 10Gb RAM (2Gb soldered + extra 8Gb DDR3).
The Sony Vaio has some very impressive specs (faster CPU and faster SSD solution + lighter), but I'm concerned about its build quality, touchpad, speakers and how well the HD4000 would perform compared to the GT620M in the UX32VD. The 620M is generally 2x faster than the HD4000 in Ultrabooks, but HD4000 runs at 350MHz (base) on ultrabooks vs 650MHz (base) on standard voltage models like the one in the Vaio Z.
Which one would you guys pick?
