Interested in getting this device to replace A1226 ('07) Macbook Pro. Main activity is computer science MOOCing. The Macbook complains when streaming videos while MATLAB is open. I have an SSD and stock RAM. Thing gets hot (really hot), its noisy, and it is heavy.

Concerns about getting a UX305 now:

Windows 10. (I use Linux and OSX now, but I want to try Windows' latest.) Will I be able to upgrade?

No USB Type C.

Forgoing any benefits of SkyLake.

Are these major problems? I tried out the device in a Microsoft store. It was right near an XPS 13. I did like the feel of the keys on the XPS more, they were softer to the touch. But I wanted the Asus more. The thinness seemed cooler than the smaller footprint--not to mention the price difference.

Realized I was stupid for not upgrading RAM on Macbook while writing this so I ordered 4gb. Anyway, going abroad later this year. Maybe I should wait until out of North America so I can buy the UX305 with an M 5Y71. Does anyone know whether this will come with the lower res panel?

All Windows 7/8/8.1 copies get Windows 10 for free, as long as you upgrade in the first year. (8 gets it for free, but will probably need to be upgraded to 8.1 before moving to 10?)

My concern with an ASUS (I have one for work right now) is that with the touch screen, the screen hinge is flimsy and so when you touch the screen, it wobbles. Super annoying, I instead just use my personal macbook for work.
