I wanted to ask if anyone has successfully installed the AHCI driver for this add-on card when doing a clean install of Win 7. I'm assuming that you have to do it then because when I try to install the driver from the CD included with the card, Win 7 crashes and then has to go through a long fix up process. Can anyone advise?

Don't install the driver from the disk, and don't connect a drive to the card first. Leave your drive connected to the existing SATA controller and install the card without anything attached. Let Windows detect and it will use the default Microsoft AHCI driver. Shut down. Connect your drive to the card and start up again.

The only driver you should need to install is the NEC USB 3.0 driver.

I'll try this method sometime this week and report success or failure. Just bought an ASUS U3S6 card and a USB 3.0 enclosure to play with myself.

The full story on my experience is here

Well, just as you said, Windows picked up the SATA 3.0 port and installed the default driver for it. I had to download and install the NEC USB 3.0 drivers for the card to get that up and running. Transferring 1.04TB of data over USB 3.0 took a little less than 3 hours and averaged 115 MB/sec or better on a WD Green 2TB drive.

I will be getting a Crucial C300 256GB SSD (OMFG I can't wait!!!!) in the mail today, so I will also be able to test this card out with that drive attached in the very near future (hopefully tonight) as well.

My experience with upgrading my laptop to an 80GB Intel SSD was amazing, so I can't wait to get this thing in my desktop. I use around 130-140GB of storage at any given time, so I decided against the Intel 160GB drive even thought it probably would've been my first choice except for the limited capacity. 256GB should be plenty roomy though, as I've never been anywhere near out of space with my 300GB Velociraptor. After this upgrade, I don't think there is anything cost effective I could do to make my rig any faster.

Sweet! Think you meant 256GB drive tho. ;)

Ahhh... I remember I had a 250MB drive. I upgraded from my 40MB. It was HUGE! How was I ever going to fill all that space?!

Definitely some nice specs there.

Yeah, GB ;).

Crucial SSD installed without any issues whatsoever. Benched it real quick and read is 346MB/sec, write is around 187MB/sec. The write speed is a bit low, but still blazing fast.

Do you have a problem with booting up?
I get the option to choose the C300 and have to press enter before it will load windows.
I have changed the boot menu in bios so that the C300 is the first device but it still brings up that option screen.

... installed the U3S6 on my simple DELL Vostro 220 with Intel Duo E8400 ; U3 worked fine from the start; had to do a Dell BIOS update (mobo G45M03) to get S6 to work; now still need to get myself that C300 *wink* ... in the meantime my S3 WD3200AAKS is already faster than before @ read 109.7 Mb !
pity just i cant get that the AAM set to 254 but stays defaulted 128, meaning i'm stuck at 16 ms access time ...
