Maybe Asus sees the scalping prices for GPUs, realizes that the supply situation isn't going to get better as long as both AMD and NVidia are component-constrained, so they've decided to "take profits" from the situation.

/cynical conspiracy mode OFF

To wit: I haven't heard about any tariffs increasing this year.

How about they increase production to stop the price gouging instead?

I would rather pay a bumped up MSRP than double or triple it because of almost non existent availability.

It's like this in practice anyway. I don't think any of the new cards can be found at MSRP exactly, they are always $50-200 over MSRP (and that's considered a good deal :p). The only cards I see at MSRP are the Nvidia FE ones at Best Buy, which are hardly ever in stock.

Techpowerup added prices to their article. This is just absolutely mad, heads must roll. MSI scalped some cards, ASUS scalps them all.

ASUS store has listed the following components at their respectable prices:
  • ROG-STRIX-RTX3090-O24G-WHITE: $2,109.99
  • ROG-STRIX-RTX3090-O24G-GAMING: $ 1,979.99
  • RTX3090-24G-EK: $2,014.99
  • TUF-RTX3090-O24G-GAMING: $1,839.99
  • ROG-STRIX-RTX3080-O10G-WHITE: $1,049.99
  • ROG-STRIX-RTX3080-O10G-GAMING: $ 929.99
  • RTX3080-10G-EK: $999.99
  • TUF-RTX3080-O10G-GAMING: $859.99
  • ROG-STRIX-RTX3070-O8G-WHITE: $779.99
  • ROG-STRIX-RTX3070-O8G-GAMING: $699.99
  • RTX3070-8G-EK: $729.99

redacted the TUF 3080 was on my short list. Maybe that will push me back to Radeon

They would if they could, but they're constrained by their suppliers as well which means they can't make more GPUs without more dies from AMD/NV and they can't make more of those without having additional wafers from the fabs.

The only way to get more of those is for them to pay more for the materials that they need. Price gouging exists because of these shortages, not because anyone is being greedy or artificially limiting production.

I think this is one reason for the supply shortage. The massive bitcoin price hike in the last few months means mining is somewhat profitable again, and you can partly offset the cost of the cards that way. I prefer to just trade the stuff though.

Hopefully Biden will reduce or eliminate tariffs in two weeks when he's sworn in.
Not going to happen. There are tariffs on China side as well. Biden can't just drop tariffs without negotiating with China to drop theirs too. It's going to take a long time to negotiate both sides to drop tariffs, it's not going to be quick. Maybe in a year.

Once they're gone you can bet that prices will not decrease.

Just when you think PC gaming has turned the corner hardware manufactures shoot themselves in the foot. Those GPU prices are mental, might as well buy a PS5. Once any of the consoles start giving real mouse and keyboard support its game over. It's prices like these that kill the PC gaming market.

It's funny, I was just saying in P&N that I thought I might spend my $600 stimulus payment on a 3070. I should be more careful what I wish for.

sheesh good thing I bought my parts starting in October in anticipation of the new CPUs and GPUs.

GPU's have been grossly overpriced for years... this is just insult to injury. Probably not going to get better anytime soon.

I'm just sticking with Vega pfff... still runs stuff with playable frames so whatever.

The GPU situation is bad anyway, at least on nVidia's side. PS5 and Xbox Series X have 16GB RAM which means future games may not be able to fit all their high res textures in just 8GB. nVidia knows this and that's why they are going to release the next round of cards with higher RAM. It's just a very, very bad idea to pay this much for only 8GB/10GB, at least for the 3060 Ti and 3080. Remember the Unreal engine PS5 demo? Don't think that's gonna run on anything with less than 12GB VRAM.

$500 for a 3060TI...or an entire Xbox/PS. Eventually at this rate nVidia's only customers will be miners. The rest will switch to AMD-powered consoles.

This problem would easily be solved if world governments banned crypto, or at least started taxing it with real money.

Global warming could be solved, if we had world govts just completely ban PCs and game consoles altogether. I mean, games are nothing but violence/murder simulations anyways.

See how that works? I can play that game too.

Except consoles and PCs aren't pyramid ponzi schemes like crypto. When you buy a PC or console you get something physical and tangible that actually does something.

With crypto you get a figment of someone's imagination - some random D00D somewhere on the internet said it had value.

At least Crypto adds to the country's GDP, instead of decreasing it by sucking up everyone's productive time that they're playing games instead.

And why don't you advocate to shut down the stock market, and most of our existing electronic financial systems and institutions..... They operate on "bits" too, they aren't tangible.

Crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, on their face, are no more and no less a "ponzi scheme", than the existing stock market.

BTW, that's a good idea, to tax Crypto. Let's tax it at the source, tax the GPUs themselves, based on their TeraFlop/sec computational capability theoretical rating. I propose $1 per teraflop rating. It would be akin to property and vehicle excise taxes. Crypto transactions themselves, would no longer be directly taxed. Fair is fair.

Likely, because of their (relative to the rest of the PC) "excessive" energy usage, California should institute an additional "GPU Green Tax", to provide carbon credits or tree planting or whatnot, to offset carbon emissions from GPU energy usage. Make that $0.05 per watt used by the GPUs. Future versions of Windows sold in California, and video drivers from Intel, Nvidia, and AMD, would be required by law to monitor energy usage and report it to a central authority in California.

Sure thing, @BFG10K , LET'S TAX IT ALL!

Edit: Of course, we would need "GPU registration" too, to make sure that someone wasn't buying GPUs off of the "black market", and using them without paying taxes on them.

No it doesn't. The only thing crypto does is suck up power equivalent to all of Denmark or Ireland while doing absolutely nothing of value. You may as well just turn on a heater outdoors.

People who play games fund the multi-billion gaming industry. People running crypto fund nothing since their hardware would've been purchased anyway by gamers. Miners are just electrical parasites.

And why don't you advocate to shut down the stock market, and most of our existing electronic financial systems and institutions..... They operate on "bits" too, they aren't tangible.
Because stocks are based on real things that actually exist and have value, such as property, software, hardware, IP, cars, houses, gold, etc.

Crypto isn't any of that. It's just random numbers that a random person on the internet decided have value. The digital equivalent of religion.

Why should legitimate GPU customers pay taxes for pyramid schemes? It's the government's job to go after pyramid schemes.

You know, @BFG10K , horse+buggy mfgs, used to poo-poo cars. Yet, they sparked a relative revolution in American freedom and independence. Crypto-currencies are doing the same thing for finances, RIGHT NOW, for people that "get" them. That's OK, you've just painted a picture to the world that you're a "horse and buggy person". That's OK. I'm going to laugh all the way to (my own) bank, while you and your existing financial systems get "sucked up" and destroyed by the "great reset" that's happening now.

PS. Look at CoinMarketCap.com , look at the Market Cap. of some of the larger coins. That's REAL MONEY worth of investments.

Edit: If crypto-currencies are BS, then why are all of the major world gov'ts looking to introduce their own "digital dollars"? They're late to the party, they'll never catch up.
