Xbitlabs is reporting there is a problem with some Via K8T890 chipsets preventing them from being compatible with the upcoming A64 X2 CPUs (see article here). Forget the K8T890 for a second. If you read the article, the Via representative outright states that the K8T800 and the K8T800 Pro are not (and will not) be compatible with the new dual-core AMD CPUs!

I have an Asus SK8V (as do many who went for the socket 940 FX51 and FX53). I didn't have the money at the time for a FX CPU (had to pay for my ECC-Registered memory), so I have been running on an Opteron 144 with the hopes of one day upgrading to a dual-core CPU (i.e. Opteron 165, 170 or 175). Are my hopes dashed? Is there any hope of a dual-core Opteron running on an Asus SK8V? Or should I start watching the prices of Opteron 152s now before they become scarce?

Thanks!

DISREGARD -- I read the article wrong and must have been fearing the worst. The Via K8T800 and K8T800 Pro WILL support dual-core provided the motherboard manufacturer provides BIOS support. I'm feeling better already knowing I most likely won't need to replace my motherboard to go dual-core.
