I know today motherboards are supposed to have great sound vs the older ones. I was wondering if I would benefit from buying a decent sound card, mainly for games. You would think if the motherboards have come all this was, wouldn't the sound cards have done the same? What do you think, sound cards = waste of hard earned money?

Thanks

Onboard sound works great today. Only reason I think most get soundcards is if they are doing specific music editing or using software.

For gaming onboard will work fine.
I'd spend the money on a receiver and output from the digital optical port before I bought a soundcard.

For the average user the on-board is fine, no need to waste cash on an add-in sound card unless you have a specific need.

If you play MMO's a sound card is nice. You can have the game sounds coming out of the speakers, and your ventrilo in your headset. Even a cheap card works fine for this.
