asus sabertooth x58 memory detection

I am having a strange problem( or not) with my asus sabertooth motherboard. For some reason the memory detection is flaky. I thought I got a bad one and even RMA'ed but the new one is doing the same thing. What is happening is some of the slots dont detect the stick.

I tried 6 GB with sticks in slots 1,3 and 5 and it wont detect slot 3. Then I tried 4gb, same issue wont detect slot 3. Now I am trying 8GB and both 3 and 5 are not detected. for testing I put 1 stick in slot 2 and it detected it fine and show the right speed under XMP.

So whats going on. the manual says for 2 sticks use 1 and 3, 3 sticks use 1,3,5 and so on, but mine does not like to work in that order...
