ASUS RT-NT12 Intermittent Broadcasting

Sound familiar?

I just replaced my flaky, low-budget Frye's wireless router with an ASUS model RT-NT12, and after only a month or two of perfect service, it TOO is flaking out.

I can get it to broadcast again by unplugging the router's power supply and plugging it in, again. It works fine for maybe 10-15 minutes, and then it quits again.

I guess you need to spend a lot more than $40.00 for a decent router? 🙂

I haven't changed any settings on the config page or performed a firmware upgrade, and the router is positioned within a mere 15'-20' from the devices.

Any suggestions?

I'd prolly start first by ensuring the latest firmware is on it. Who knows how long it sat on a shelf before you bought it, so there might be some fixes in the latest.

Thanks to both of you!

I'm now working on a firmware upgrade, but the config page throws an error when I try to upload the ZIP file from my desktop. And yes, the file is the correct firmware upgrade for this exact model, RT-N12B1. I'll stick with it but I can't see what the problem is.

Thanks again.

Don't you need to unzip it first?

Yes, firmware files need to be unzipped on your computer first before attempting to flash, if they were distributed in some sort of zip or rar archive.

Generally, firmware files end in .BIN, although some end in .TRX, and there may be other file extensions.

Yes, you need to unzip the file first. (Just yesterday I was uploading/installing a Drupal theme as a ZIP file, so I automatically assumed a ZIP file was OK.)

I've updated the OS and I'm not broadcasting smoothly, for the time being.

I've downloaded the Tomato update and would like to know a little more about it first - I'm sure I can find the necessary documentation.

Hopefully a simple firmware upgrade fixed this ASUS router - I was expecting to replace it AGAIN.

Thanks everyone, and Merry Christmas.

Thanks, everyone.
