ASUS RT-N56U - Wish I new why it worked

I just purchased this router to replace my aging Trendnet TEW-633GR. The Trendnet along with evey other router I have ever known was pretty much plug in, connect to desktop, it worked. This one wasn't. My PC recognized it was there but the connection was unusable and I kept getting messages that my ISP may require a signin (it does not).

After about a half hour and a few resets and reboots of the router, modem and pc, it started working. I have no clue why it started working or why it didn't work before.

Then I set up the wireless, that was pretty easy except my DROID X phone wouldn't work with the connection. The Iphone, no problem, everything else, no problem. Again a bunch of resets and reboots later, the DROID X works.

A few hours later, my desktop stops working. I get a message that there are multiple devices with the same IP address on my network. I do the reet/reboot thing and all is well again.

Then, I see there is a firmware upgrade available. I install it, no problem. Everything seems to work but.... I can barely get into the web set up screens for the router. I enter the OP address and my screen is slow. It takes minutes for the page to open and then I only see partial graphics. Clicking on the menu choices is super slow as well. This is with IE 9. Firefox is slower, Chrome and Opera just timeout. Somehow I think this is firmware related and thats where I am now. Everything seems to work except for the setup screens.

I am afraid though that I might need the setup screens or something will stop working and I won't be able to fix it. I am not very confident of the router at this point.

Any suggestions?

I've solved the problem with mine, I sent the damn thing back.

On paper this router rocks, is the most feature rich, and has the hardware (processing and RAM) to back it up.

In reality it's a putz, it blows chunks, and drops connectivity or does an imitation of a brick with blue lights frequently.

Two problems were common. When my lease expired with my ISP, it went through a fit of trying to renew, and half the time never succeeded without a power cycle to recover.

One feature I like is 2 USB ports with up to 30 watts of power to power devices, would function as a network share and as a FTP server I could connect to from the internet, BUT any heavy access to the disk would cause the router to again do it's imitation of a brick.

This sucks, because I liked it (when it worked) dual channel a/b/g/n wireless, print server function, gigibit Ethernet ports, QoS (though controls were clumsy).

So back to my trusty Buffalo WHR-G54S with DD-WRT, and has never locked up or had a connectivity problem, never. It has run for 6 months at a time, and was only restarted because of a power outage at my house.

Part of the boasting on the box is that internet performance is superior because it has a "hardware NAT engine" yet speedtest.net tests with my old Buffalo is at least 10% faster.
