Asus RT AC66U & N66U range

So I have both routers in two different locations. They are both very capable of sending and receiving a signal well beyond the size of each building. But I am seeing a weird behavior.

Basically signal strength decreases up to a certain point but then increases again to compensate for the weakened signals. This seems intentional. The problem is that there is somewhat of a "ring" of barely usable wifi signal around each building. It becomes more usable as I continue to move away from router well past the range in which I would care to use wifi (100-200 feet radius). What can I do to minimize or remove this ring?

I am running default firmware on both modems. Thanks for any responses!

I doubt that it has anythiing to do with the Routers, it the nature of the terrain and propagation through Windows.

Put Outdoor Antennae.
