ASUS Rampage II Extreme $330 vs $290 ASUS P6T Deluxe V2

Just ordered OCZ OCZ700MXSP 700W SLI/CrossFire Active PFC for i7 920, OCZ XMC 6GB 1600 RAM, 150GB WDR+1TB WDC+1TB HITACHI HDDs, and GPU from XFX 5850 or 5870 i guess.
NEWEGG got ASUS Rampage II Extreme LGA 1366 x58 for $330 after MIR, i was thinking to buy ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 or ASUS P6TD Deluxe for $290.

What do you think guys which Motherboard will be good for this specs above?
Will be Rampage IIExtreme overkill ?

They're both absurdly overkill. people who build rigs for themselves do not buy products with enormous premiums simply because a gladiator or lightning bolt is printed on the box. These kinds of products are for demonstrations at trade shows, boutique PCs, children, or window-shoppers at retail stores. It is totally outrageous to pay $150-200 more than the tried and true X58 boards that normal builders/overclockers typically go for simply because the board has a pretty color scheme or 1-billion-phase PWM. All of ASUS's republic-of-gamer products are total gimmicks made by the same people with the same parts as the regular P6T series. Even ASUS "deluxe" boards are guilty of $50+ premiums for a bunch of totally useless knick knacks that i can't even think of right now. You used to get a little overclocking PDA that was a total piece of shit. Not sure what happened to that, but there are plenty of great boards for under $250 that you should be looking at, unless you really have your heart set on getting ripped off.

EVGA for instance has a series of great X58 boards with lifetime warranties and are great overclockers. And i'm not talking about their rip-off classified boards. The 121-BL-E756 and 141-BL-E757 are both very well-outfitted boards. Foxconn, MSI, and even ASRock also have surprisingly nice X58 boards that are very competitively priced.

The bottom line is that most if not all X58 boards overclock great. it's too much to ask for more than 4.2 GHz 24/7 from an i7 920, and these $300 or $400 motherboards are not going to increase your chances of achieving that. It all falls back on the CPU, and the only true way boards can differentiate themselves is in their warranty. If you want a high-quality motherboard with unprecedented customer support and a lifetime warranty, just get the EVGA 121-BL-E756 for $210.

Searching newegg for "X58" and sorting the results by Price Descending is not the way to shop. It should be obvious to you that buying circuit boards based on their looks/color scheme is a trap, and frankly, the all-black EVGA boards look pretty clean. you racist?

that was a joke at the end there. but seriously, i'm going to ask this anyway, is this your first build? did you do any research at all before buying these parts? why are you mixing a WD 1TB with a Hitachi 1TB? Why not just get two hitachis? Why did you buy a raptor when SSDs are faster and cheaper? i think you should try to cancel that order and let anandtech consult you through the entire build. not just the motherboard.

and what do you mean by "5870 or 5850?" You don't know which one you bought, or you haven't decided yet?

of course, if you're buying the parts in this country and taking the machine back to europe, getting a defective part replaced is probably going to be more trouble than its worth. better make sure everything is working great before you go back to georgia, if you're going anywhere, that is.

Thanks for reply.
I'm building since 2000 , it's mine 20-th build i guess so i'm trying to build ONE for good.
I like EVGA's board by myself but EVGA 121-BL-E756 is MATX and doesn't have LIFETIME warranty, only one they have EVGA E758-A1 3-Way SLI for $280 but i don't like it.
So for same price range i'm looking for in ASUS band. SSD are good but for the price range $150 you can buy just 64GB one, From GPU's i didn't decided wich one to buy because right now i'm on budget and only chance guess i got is 5850.
What else to say ? I'm not building PC for RAID, just for OS(RAPTOR),Applications+Games(Caviar) and DATA(Hitachi).

That PSU is Not too great

Hard OCP "FFFAIL"

No name Chinese Capacitors

keep a Fire Extinguisher around

Thanks Mr.Fox. I didn't received it yet, still in "Packed" status, can i just DO NOT accept package from FedEx and return it back, will ZZFly still charge me 15% restocking fee ?
Or maube they can exchange it for another PSU ?

If you can .. work it out with them to not accept the Item

and if you keep the money with them... they should arrange without re-stock.. tell them about the reviews

Go on Hard OCP and find whatever, they have the best testing then buy thru ZZF

If you're on a budget (can't afford more than an HD 5850) but you're buying a super expensive motherboard, you're doing it wrong.

Motherboards contribute very little to the overall performance of the system. Generally speaking, you should only care about the important features (number and configuration of expansion slots, number of SATA ports, overclocking options, etc.) and the reliability of the manufacturer. It's hard to go wrong with any of the big ones - ASUS, Gigabyte, and even EVGA these days. The money you save by buying a "mid range" board could be better spent on a better graphics card, more memory, etc.

And, since you mentioned that you're looking to build "ONE for good," keep in mind that super expensive hardware today is still outdated hardware in the near future; the only difference between the top-of-the-line stuff and the mid range is that it makes a VERY expensive paperweight, not just a fairly expensive one.

he could've done a number of things differently. the $200 EVGA is definitely the best X58 board for the money. The $100 saved on the board would easily have put you into intel X25 territory offering a humongous boost in general purpose performance over the velociraptor or any other disk. two hitachi HDDs instead of the caviar black would've saved another $20. The DDR1600 is useless also and does not help overclocking, so you could've saved $40 there too.

you can easily afford an i7 + 5870 + X25 if you put your money in the right place.

even the $150 MSI X58M got great reviews here on anandtech and other sites. brand loyalty is an expensive thing when it comes to high end parts. if you want all these other nice parts on top of a gaudy ASUS board, get an i7 860 and the P7P55D and a 4GB DDR3 kit instead of 6GB.

Thanks but i already bought this parts"
1. i7 920 D0 with CM V8 cooler
2. OCZ XMP 1600 2x3(6GB)
3. 150 gb WD VR, 1TB WD Caviar, 1TB Titachi
4. OCZ OCZ700MXSP 700W PSU(i hope it will work)

So i need Motherboard and Video Card.

the corsair 750 TX is made by channel well and doesn't have the best voltage regulation. 750w is overkill for this machine since you aren't going to have multiple GPUs.

The 650TX, however, is made by seasonic and is a great unit. the seasonic-made corsairs are very popular, very quiet, and still "too much power" in my opinion for this build. no need going more than 650 watts since your build won't even apply a 50% load.

you can get 750 watt units direct from seasonic but the price is just way more.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817151084

this is almost the same exact power supply as the corsair 650TX, it's just rated to run at 750, while the corsair would be considered to be "overloaded." both the 650TX and seasonic 750 can be overloaded up to 850 watts, though, so i would just save your money and get the 650TX.

this i7 machine you're planning to build won't even consume 350 watts, so trust me when i say you don't need a 750.

Even with SLI or Crossfire GPU's 650TX is good enough?
750TX channel made doesn't have the best voltage regulation ? So bad, just for $10 more i should buy 750TX.
What about Thermaltake PSU's? Wich version for ~~$100 i can get good deal?
Thermaltake Toughpower XT W0229RU 750W ATX12V V2.3 80PLUS BRONZE is good one?
Better than CORSAIR ?

The 650TX suffers from very high ripple that reaches 100mv and up. Get the Antec TP-750.

Antec TP-750 ? I guess for gaming systems one single RAIL is much better, Antec TP-750 got 4 - 25A each.

Thanks but...i like XFX more with Lifetime support and i still need to search for motherboards.
ASUS don't have disscounts yet on ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 or ASUS P6TD Deluxe Mobs...
With ASUS MOB i'll buy XFX GPU combo.
