ASUS Radeon 9800XT/TVD 256-MB vs. Stock 9800XT

I just read a review of the ASUS Radeon 9800XT/TVD 256-MB - its largest benefit (other than VIVO and the included software) is its heavy duty heatsink/cooling. The card they received had a core @405 (not 412 they were not sure why that was so....) but when they tried to OC it they could "only" get it to 435 not the 440 that they were expecting. In either case they were disappointed because they had routinely OC the stock 9800XT to run stable at 465.

Any ideas as to why the ASUS with the larger cooling would run slower.... and has anyone actually gotten their 9800XT to run at 465?

The gpu might simply not have been a very overclockable one. It always differes from chip to chip. At any rate that is a pretty horrible overclock, when some 9800np's are getting over 435mhz.

When you say the GPU might not have been overclockable..... did you mean ALL of the ones used by ASUS or just that chip (on an individual basis)?

I mean just that chip. You might get another 9800xt from asus and it would overclock much better.
