Asus Probe vs Hardware *Update

I am running a XP 2600 333 FSB processor in an Asus A7N8X. Nothing is over clocked. I have a Volcano 9 heatsink/fan setup running at full speed. I also have 2 generic fans in the front of my case, 2 enermax fans in the back pulling air out, and a side window feeding fresh air just in front of the cpu.

My question is that in the bios my temp readings are about 62 Celc. but in windows Asus probe tells me that they are 32 Celc. Anyone have any ideas what could be going wrong and if I should be worried or happy about my cpu temp.

Any help would be appreciated,
Mike

The BIOS temps reports the actual CPU die temperature, whereas AsusProbe reports the temperature of the diode underneath the CPU, which is located in the socket actually. So the BIOS is the accurate one.

That is what i was afraid of. I know this has probably been asked 1000 times but why would my cpu temps be so high. I should have plenty of air flow. The only thing i can think of is that the bottom of the heat sink when i went to put it on looked like a record. I havent ever smoothed a heatsink before but would this be a viable option to lower the cpu time?

Thanks again for all the help.

The Volcano 9 is not that good of a heatsink/fan unit. You might want to invest in a Thermalright SLK-800 and an adjustable-RPM YSTech 80mm fan. Good price on SLK-800 and they carry the fan separately.

Keep in mind that AMD specs your CPU core for a maximum operating temperature of over 90C. If the actual on-CPU diode is reading 62C, that's not fantastic, but considering your heatsink, it's not out of control... the EPoX 8KHA boards read the on-CPU diode and those 60's temperatures are the norm for them as well. Not positive if the A7N8X is getting a core reading. You can't really trust Asus Probe on anything, IMHO.

Thanks for the information, that makes me feel a little better. I think tonight im going to sand the heatsink and see if that helps any. When I get a little more money or find some one to buy my heat sink/fan im going to invest in a SLK-800.

Also I was wondering, would there be any problem using the thermaltake fan on the SLK-800. It seems like a decent fan, plus I already own it.

I just got done lapping my volcano 9 heatsink and it fixed everything. The thing was very ruff and far from flat. Computer is running now at about 35 Cel with the Volcano at full RPM and is about 40 with the volcano using its own little auto adjust mode. Anyone that has this heatsink should definatly go out buy some sand paper and sit down with it for about an hour. I just used 4 sheets of 600 and 4 sheets of 1500, worked like a charm.
