This might work on other motherboards as well. Can't hurt to try.
When starting up, my Asus box was taking forever to get to the POST screen (I have the logo turned off). Sometimes more than a full minute.
Turns out the problem was my USB 3.0 external drives. Probably a SMART analysis going on. Anyway, I plugged all of them into a power strip and turn it off before booting. Now I'm into Windows within ten seconds of pushing the power button. Turn on the power strip, and all my drives are available in a few seconds. I use HWiNFO64 to monitor SMART status anyway, so I'm not losing any protection.
