Asus P8Z77-V Dlx - forgot to install the Wi-Fi Go widget

Hi

I just finished building up my new PC.

As I was about done and ready to install Windows, I was going to install the Wi-Fi Go widget, last step.
I performed a vigorous repetitive facepalm when I realized it needs to be bolted from underneath the motherboard.
Now everthing is installed in the case, all connected, and it wasn't easy with that huge Noctua NH-D14.

I used a USB wi-fi dongle I had (D-Link DWA-130).
Maybe when I go back in the case I'll consider removing the mobo and install the wi-fi widget. I'm curious... do you think I'd see a better wireless performance with the Asus wifi widget, or am I better to just stick with the USB wifi dongle?

Thanks

Funnily enough, I did EXACTLY the same thing with my new build, though the part I hadn't realised was that it had to be screwed in from below (I thought it sat rather loosely on the socket when I first put it on...)

By that stage, everything else was done, had to disconnect drives, cards, unscrew the mobo from the backplate, the whole lot... very annoying.

Lesson to learn for me there was double-check everything, right from the start!

Anyway, in answer to your question, I found performance to be much better with the included WiFi on the board than I did with my old Wi-Fi dongle, to the order of the maximum I got while downloading before was about 1.8MBps, now it can hit around 3MBps.

BUT... given it's an entirely new build, and given that neither of those speeds should really challenge even a crap Wi-Fi connection, I don't know how much of it is down to the WiFi-Go card itself.

What I can say for sure though, is that it's been rock solid and not given any problems while using it. Seems to be surprisingly interference-proof as well (didn't notice when I'd left my phone next to it, for example)

A silly question...I already have a wireless router. Would this benefit me at all to install it?

Cheers!

Ok feels good that it was not just me who did that!
I unscrewed 8 of the nine mother board screws, rotated it a bit and installed it from the back. I did that since I didn't want to rewire everything again.

gonna chime in here and say- for whatever reason, that screw was a complete pain the #$@ to unscrew.. be careful not to strip it like i basically did. i had to use a pair of pliers to loosen the nut then I could unscrew it with a regular sized screw driver after that.. just a heads up!

I would use the wireless adaptor that the board came with. Why waste a USB port when there is a header on the board that's good for only that purpose. That also frees up your USB adapter to use elsewhere should you need to.
