ASUS P8Z68 Won't Boot Windows

I've just built a new system with an ASUS P7Z68-V Pro/GEN-3.
I have 2 DVD drives connected to the Marvell ports, an SSD on one of the grey Intel ports and 4 HDDs on the remaining blue ports.
I have a Maxtor 250gb SATA HDD as a storage drive, but when this is connected up the PC just hangs at the windows logo screen (Windows was installed with only the SSD connected).
I've tried different SATA cables and also disconnecting one of the other HDDs to determine if it was due to all 4 ports being full, none of which made any different.
Has anyone got any ideas?
Thanks :)

Is your SSD set as the first boot device? Also does your system run fine with only the SSD plugged into the sata ports? If so maybe try adding a drive at a time until you find out what is causing the problem.

Yeah SSD is the first boot device, and windows was installed with only the SSD plugged in so it boots fine with no HDDs.
I have added a drive at a time, and it seems to be a Maxtor HDD causing the issue, but it has worked fine for years in another build, so I don't know why its causing an issue now :\

Maybe the Maxtor was running on it's last leg in the old build. In the process of removal and instalation it suffered from just enough of a bump or two to push it over the edge....Well it is a old drive isn't it.

I'd try the drive in another rig to see what happens. What was on the drive? Just storage and no os? What was it's position in the last build? Boot? Storage? Depending on what it was possibly hidden windows boot files could cause the issue.

Given that the Maxtor drive of yours is years old, since it hasn't been made in quite a long time, I suspect you've got a dying or dead drive. Replace it and move on.

Thanks for the replies :)
I don't think the Maxtor drive is faulty as I have just re-installed windows with all of the drives connected and it boots fine.
I have narrowed it down to a problem with the Intel RST drivers - the system boots fine before they are installed, and doesn't after.
When I try to boot to safe mode with Intel RST installed it just hangs at classpnp.sys.
I rolled back to before I installed Intel RST using system restore and it boots fine again.
Is this a known issue?
