Hi everyone. I just installed Windows 8.0 Pro and then updated it to Windows 8.1 Pro on a fresh, blank Samsung SSD 850 Pro on my existing PC. (Specs will follow.)

I'm having an odd problem though. The device manager is reporting an unknown USB device that has failed in some way... at the USB root hub level, like, at the same level as devices that are hard-wired into the mainboard like the bluetooth.

Since it has failed at the first stage, there is no good VID/PID to look up (VID is 0000).

Here's a screenshot of the Device Manager in "View Devices by Connection".

You will note that there is the USB controller, then there is a "Generic USB Hub". These are the "ports" on the controller (still on the mobo's PCB). The bluetooth controller is hard-wired. The SECOND "Generic USB Hub" is the hub in my monitor, and the three devices below that are my keyboard, mouse, and card reader. The "Unknown Device" is NOT connected to my monitor!

Those things, plus the UPS you see above, are the only USB devices connected to my PC... so it has to be an onboard device. I think. But I can't think of anything!!

Does this have something to do with generic sound card drivers vs specific Realtek ones? Generic USB 3 drivers vs special Asmedia ones? Generic bluetooth drivers? Asus' fast charge thing? The Virtu feature I've NEVER used? I don't want to install any extra drivers I don't have to. Yarrrrgh!

------

Specs:

Asus P8Z68-V Pro
Intel Core i7-2600k overclocked via max turbo freq to 4.6 GHz
16 GB RAM (4x4GB), can't remember speed
Samsung SSD 850 Pro 512 GB
(storage hard drives to be added in later)
2 x Geforce GTX 680 2GB (SLI)
3 monitors, running independently right now, intend to do nvidia surround when configured properly

There is an Asmedia USB 3.0 controller available on that motherboard. Check the BIOS to see that it is disabled.

If it isn't disabled, choose whether you want to install the driver for it.

If I'm wrong about all of this, it was a good hunch, anyway.

That board allocates resources to all the features. There is a table of configurations for specifically the third "PCI-E x16" slot that will either run at x4 or x1. These configurations all affect what combinations of the Asmedia, eSATA controller, etc. will be enabled or disabled on the board.

If it weren't the USB3 controller, I could always suspect a bad USB port. But I've had the P8Z68-V Pro board for more than three years now. The Asmedia controller gave me problems in other respects, and as I said, it's not supposed to work at all with certain combinations of other features enabled.

I think the board came with two rear I/O-plate USB 3 ports, and the 20-pin plug and cable on the board near the RAM modules. Right away, I wanted a 4-port USB 3 hub installed in the front panel bay. A decent one would run $25, while you'd pay that much for the P8Z68's "Deluxe" version which only provides a two-port front-panel extension from the motherboard plug. That just led me to realize the allocation problems with the V-Pro's features.

Until the OP says something else, I'm just assuming that the BIOS Asmedia is "enabled" and no drivers were installed.
