I built a new system a week ago using the ASUS P8Z68-V Pro/GEN3. It seems to have been running fine.

This morning, the system was at idle. I had AI Suite II – Monitor open and CPUID Hardware Monitor. I walked by and looked at the screen. There was a temp warning in the system tray from AI Suite II about MB temp…123C. ASUS AI Suite & CPUID Hardware Monitor both showed MB temps of about 123C. CPU temps were in the 35C range. I immediately shut the system down. In a couple minutes, I took the cover off to look things over; and then restarted the system. All fans are working. BIOS Monitor showed MB temp of 25C. In Windows AI Suite II showed MB temp 24C.

BIOS is 0402. I’m running Windows XP. The system has an SSD for the OS drive and is using the onboard graphics, so the only significant heat sources are the MB, 8GB memory & CPU.

I reset HW Monitor and watched it for a while.

Initially HW Monitor showed:
Value Max
systin 24C 24C
cputin 60C 60C
auxtin 28C 28C

After a few minutes
Value Max
systin 24C 24C
cputin 60C 127C
auxtin 28C 127C

cuptin & auxtin both bounced to the 127C value for a moment…with that value staying in the max reading.

Sometime later the warning: “Warning Motherboard 123.0 centigrade” message appeared again. Ai Suite Monitor and CPUID Hardware Monitor both showed 123C as the motherboard temp.

I’m suspecting bad data reporting from the MB rather than a real temperature problem.

Suggestions?

A flaky/bad MB?

I've gotten the same message when I had Ai Suite open and was running Prime95 and monitoring temps with Realtemp. Realtemp did not show the 123 centigrade message, so I suspect it was being caused by Ai Suite. I heard no change in fan speed and when I closed Ai Suite, I no longer go the message. I also saw several folks post this same problem on the Asus forum and they concluded it was bad data probably from Ai Suite. I also keep getting the "Ai Suite has stopped working" message, so another indication to me that it may be Asus' software.

Btw, I have the non Gen3 MB

It seems that 127c is always the generic value for a misread. I have seen it on many boards like this. If you were cooking at 127c, you would be smelling it and your systin temp monitor would be higher due to the CPU and Aux heating up your case.

As information for anyone else who might run into this: a post on the ASUS forum suggested it might be a software conflict caused by running the two HW monitoring programs at the same time.
I’ve been running ASUS AI Suite II > Sensor Recorder only, for almost 4 days…no warnings or high temp readings. It looks like using both programs at the same time was the problem.
