ASUS P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3 double boot, BSOD

Hi, just got my new rig built. After some initial challenges with the OEM Win 7 64bit, it successfully installed. Nice new clean desktop. Playing around with the basic programs to enjoy the speed of the SSD (Corsair Force GT 240GB, brand new)...then whammo, BSOD.

Rebooted (double boot every time, but it's consistent when it does it, about 7 out of ten time -- powers up, 2 seconds, shuts down, 4 seconds, powers up, POSTs and boots the system), let it sit there for a few minutes...BSOD.

I haven't connected to the internet. I don't have any other drives installed. It's a new OEM install on a new disk.

I reinstalled the OS...twice...after reformatting the drive partition in the Win 7 installer...same thing.

Tried running the ASUS driver disk, all it would do is show me the splash screen with three different "special" programs to install but I couldn't get anything to happen. Shut down that screen, re-initialized the ASUS disk, same thing, gets stuck on the opening menu animation.

Closed out of that with Task Manager (all of this with the keyboard, my mouse from my previous system is not a USB), opened a couple programs, or tried to, then whammo, another BSOD. I was ready this time though, just fired up the iphone camera when it crashed and got a quick picture which I'll try to post below.

I'd downloaded a bunch of drivers from the ASUS site but there were so many, they were so big, and I didn't know really how to install them piecemeal, so thought I'd try the disc first.

Of course, BSODs take precedence...haven't a clue as I don't have that much savvy. Glad the hardware seems to be working alright but now I'm stumped and could use some help as to what I should do next.

In BIOS by the way (current as of Sept, not sure if that's the latest one), everything shows up and seems nominal.

I have tpu and epu switches on (up) only because I don't understand yet even after reading the manual exactly where they should be. I do want to OC, but gotta get 'er running good first.

The blue LED fans look nice at least!

Well, can't paste a photo in here for some reason, so here's the essentials, cropped the photo a bit tight in my haste so may have to have it crash again and get all the numbers. Here's what I can see:

****STOP: 0x000000f4 (0x000000000000000000003), 0xFFFFFA800E826060, 0xFFFFFA800E826340, 0xFFFFF80002BDBDB0)

dumped physical memory to disk: 55, for what that's worth.

Rig:

Asus p8Z68-V Pro/Gen3
i7-2600K
Corsair 750W TX (NZXT 850W on order)
16GB G Skill Ripjawx X DDR3 1333
Sapphire Radeon 5770 1GB onboard memory (GDDR5)
Corsair Force GT 240GB
ASUS 16X DVD-R (x2)

Thanks for any help from the bigger brains out there in Anandtechland.

Hey,

I have i7-2600k, Asus p8Z68-V Pro/Gen3, 16gb (4x4gb) Gskill Ripjaws X Performance, Corsair Force GT 120GB and im having problems when i use all 4 sticks of memory. I get bluescreens and all kinds of weird behaviour when i use all 4 slots (16gb).

When i use 2x4gb or 3x4gb sticks its no problem at all, works like a charm.
So its either problem with 16gb gskill and this motherboard or something with using all 4 slots thats fucking up im guessing...

I have run memtest on all 4 sticks and its no problem, even did 4x4gb test and no problem so im clueless really..

If u find an answer _please_ write here or contact me m8, best of luck

TPU on will overclocked the board,by default they should be disabled, you want to install things at normal speeds first before overclocking.....EPU is power management when you want to save energy etc...

I did not bother with drivers from CD,I went straight to here http://www.overclock.net/t/1042186/asus-z68-series-information-thread-drivers-bioses-overclocking-reviews since they are newer.

I did read be careful with some aftermarket coolers since over tightening the heatsink can bend the board and cause issues etc...

Btw go into bios in boot menu then "Option Rom Messages" and set it to "keep current" that should fix the double boot issue.

Hi Box4M, thanks for the suggestions, it caused me to look closer at the mobo and I saw the memory LED (up in the right corner next to the MEM OK button) was red. I booted up again this morning, pressed the button...and no more BSOD! I'd remembered reading about that in the manual during the build, and reread it this morning. it said if you have memory problems, press it during boot and the mobo should work it out.
Magic! It's been up and running without a hiccup for 2 hours now...fingers crossed as I update all the drivers, and get connected to the net etc.
Thanks again, that may indeed have been the ticket, will know more down the road after getting everything up and running and testing. So far CPU is running cool with the Hyper 212+
BTW, didn't pull any memory sticks so it seems MEM OK is the trick, have you tried that with your board?

Thanks Mem, I'll go to overclock once I get connected...see my msg above to box4m re memory, the MEM OK button seems to have sorted out what was possibly a memory glitch. It was acting like a funky memory thing now that I ponder it a bit more...been awhile since I built a system and had forgotten a lot of things.

Will check the Option Rom thing, thanks, didn't know aboujt that.

Re the cooler, I do have those screws down pretty tight...had to do that to keep the cooling "tower" from moving on top of the CPU die...it still will move if I apply a bit of force to it, say enough to turn a door handle...but I dn't want to tighten it down any more. Guess diagnostics once i'm further down the road will tell more, I'm afraid if I loosen it up much (I have two fans on it too) it will move down due to gravity! Even thought of using a tie string to anchor it to the top of the case!

thanks for your help!

I really wouldn't advise putting the amount of force required to open a door handle onto a CPU cooler, it is one sure fire way to balls up your mobo around the cpu socket.

Thanks, that was describing how much force it takes to very slightly twist the CPU cooler...not the force I was putting on the screws, it was much less than that. Looser, and the cooler seems like it will move...any way to gauge how tight to screw it down? These are the areas where instructions sheets are often completely inadequate.

Everything seems to be working now so maybe I'm okay...it's been up and running all day without a crash, as I'm downloading and installing the update drivers on my laptop, because I can't wirelessly connect to my router, not sure what to do about that right now so doing it the hard way and I'll plug the modem in when I move the box back to my office.

Are you running the driver disk from boot? If so boot into windows then insert the driver disk. Sorry if you are already doing this but i'm getting confused over what driver install problems you are having.

I'm booted, in windows, and installing from c: folder with driver updates I downloaded onto flash drive, then copied to c:

Just Now got a BSOD though trying to install LAN so I can connect to net.

Will try again and see if I can photograph BSOD

I was sent by someone to overclockers.net to download drivers and that's really confused a lot of this process. Not sure the drivers are what they said they were, correct for my system and win 7 64

Also downloaded from sapphire my radon vapor-x hd5770 updates, which said they were from AMD once I started install! But I'm sure the card is nvidia chip. It errors and failed to install too.

So I'm a bit adrift now, confused about which updates to install, I may just go back to the disc and start over. Seems even drivers I downloaded from ASUS site don't all work! But I'm sure I'm goofing something up fierce somewhere, just don't know where.
But who to trust if sapphire's own drivers crash?
Thanks for help

You have other options like get drivers from Asus website here including Lan,http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68V_PROGEN3/#download.

Latest drivers for your AMD video card (5770)can be found here http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx (11.11 driver).

Those links above are for win7 x64.

I would try minimal hardware install,I was using onboard IGP at first, once it was running sweet then I installed my video card, also download and run memtest86+ to rule out any memory errors.
Win7 has it owns memory diagnostics tool as well, how to here http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/715-memory-diagnostics-tool.html .

Thanks a lot Mem. Seems secure now, I ran an ATTO benchmark and got 525K/ 555K as I recall first time through, for max speeds. Works for me!

I also downloaded the video driver you linked, I'd tried it more than once from different sites. It goes all the way through the installation, then says Install package failed and has me finish without the driver being installed.

I right clicked the program properties, clicked compatibility mode and selected Windows 7. No luck. Tried windows XP sp3, that worked, it recognized my monitors and everything now seems fine. Can't understand why Windows 7 64 drivers from Sapphire, AMD and Nvidia didn't work natively in Win 7. I didn't try compatibility mode on the others but anyway, so far as I can tell it's working fine. I haven't hooked up monitor #2 yet, have to install a couple programs and antivirus, then get on the net and install the Win updates.

Thanks for the mem diagnostics suggestion, I've only run Asus AI II tests and briefly at that.

This might help,http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GraphicsDriverInstallationInstructionforMicrosoftWindows7.aspx

The installation instructions include:
A system requirements check
How to obtain the latest graphics drivers for the graphics card
How to install the AMD Catalyst Software Suite

System Requirement Check: The following system requirements must be met in order for the AMD Catalyst software to install correctly

Administrative Privileges

The person installing the software must have Administrator privileges. Otherwise, the operating system may prevent the user from installing any new software onto the system.

Refer to Microsoft’s Support website for instructions on how to enable Administrator privileges.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or higher

Refer to Microsoft’s Service Pack Center for more information on how to install the latest service pack(s) for your operating system

Follow the pics and install guide in the link above.

I would install Windows updates first and install video drivers last.

I'd suspect the SSD. SF2200 drives are very problematic.

Did you enable AHCI in the BIOS? Also put it on the first white intel port, not the marvell or "plain" blue port....

AHCI is on by default and i use the first sataIII port (intel)

Btw, perhaps try the latest firmware for my corsair force gt 120gb, i have 1.3.2 now, apparently 1.3.3 exists..

Here is a summary of the new FW 1.3.3 for Force GT / 3:

1. Fixed a rare condition when waking from slumber mode that could cause the drive to hang. This can cause a BSoD if the drive is the primary storage boot device.

2. Fixed a rarely occurring issue during S3/S4 cycling to handle marginal flash timing. This can cause a BSoD if the drive is the primary storage boot device.

3. Fixed an issue during a firmware update where APM would be marked disabled in identify.

But i think BSoD should occur regardless if i use 1 or 4 ram sticks ?

Hi folks, more BSOD joy, random causes, even in win update, sometimes in reboot, sometimes after an hour of trouble-free browsing etc.

So... Ran a boot disk version of memtest 86+ v 4.2 and ran it all night... 12 hours. Seems to me memory is the culprit.

Would sure appreciate interpretation and suggestions re these results, I'm a noob in this area:

Test 0 thru 4, no errors
Test 5, 244 errors
Test 6, 9
Test 7, 1270
Test 8, 16
Test 9, 0

Errors per memory slot: 0-3, one each slot
All the rest, 4-16, no errors
Bits in error -total 1 min 1 max 1 avg 0
Max contiguous errors 1

Total errors 3152

Just a wild guess here: memory and mobo don't like each other, or mem is flawed.

RMA time? Don't want to spend another two days chasing down slots, which stick etc. unless there's a good reason, I'll swap it out for something on the Asus compatibility list, this exact memory, although it met all specs, wasn't on that list.
Its G Skill 4x4gb ripjaws X DDR 1333 (1.5v 7-7-7-21 timing, bios saw it correctly, I also didMem Ok initially which seemed to help, but only temporarily. I figured since smaller sizes of G Skill were on the list, maybe Asus hadn't gotten around to putting these on yet.

Thanks for any insights fellow Anandians. Live long and prosper!
