Asus P8Z68-V or Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P

They are pretty much the same-the Asus does have a few more ports though. If you want to go Gigabyte you might want to get the UD4P, which has firewire and eSATA, whereas the UD3 has a HDMI port which will be useless if you are going to use a graphics card. The Asus has Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.

Earlier in the summer, when I'd already decided to gamble on the ASUS P8Z68-V-Pro based on two or more reviews, I had the impression that one or another of the Z68 Gigabyte boards was causing trouble for users.

Gigabyte makes good boards, based on my LGA-775 experiences with them. But I'm pleased with the ASUS -V-Pro because of the power-phase-design. I think in that feature at least, it was about equal to the flagship ASUS Maximus IV Extreme Z. It's been a helluva good over-clocker. And . . . I like the UEFI-BIOS.

The Asus P8Z68-Pro can be had on newegg for $194.99, whereas the Gigabyte is $174.99. Both motherboards have a 12-phase power design for the CPU.

The Asus does allow overclocking the RAM to 2200 MHz...
From the Asus details:
2 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots (single at x16 or dual at x8 / x8 mode)
1 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot* [black] (max. at x4 mode, compatible with PCIe x1 and x4 devices)
From the Gigabyte details:
2 (x16, x8)
So the Asus has an x16 slot which can support X1, X4, and X8 devices. That's good.
The Asus P8Z68-V Pro doesn't have 1394, Gigabyte does.
The Asus P8Z68-V and the Pro version both have superior voltage control with a "TPU" switch.

28% gains in CineBench 10 xCPU, according to the above review.

Cheers for the replies. I think I'm going to go for P8Z68-V / Gen3, non pro version. It looks as though they are going to be released any time now.
