Helping a friend build his computer. He didn't want to take the path I took with my build and bought some different components.

I'm not a noob to building computers however something is afoot with this build;p

Breadboarded the bitch.

-He's got a x850 Seasonic ..so I kinda doubt that's an issue.
-All cables (as far as I can tell) are properly seated.
-CPU looks ok. Tiny scuff on one of the CPU contact pads (maybe from last board since he RMA'd it)
- Reseated the CPU and Heatsink
-Tried 2 different sticks of memory (both of which work in my computer) in 1-4 slots. They are G.skill 1600's.
- Comp comes on..fans spin. nobodies home. Mem-OK! light stays RED, and using it eventually brings it back to that.

As it cycles through the Mem-OK testing the CPU led light indicator on the board flashes once or twice.

WTF. Two dead board in a row? His last board had a dead ram slot.

I reinstalled the standoffs too so it shouldn't be shorting out.

Sorry to say this but he could have fried his CPU. Do you have a compatible one you could try in his board? If that doesn't work it could be the PSU, just because he has a seasonic doesn't mean it hasn't bit the dust.

I realize that it could be his PSU but I have my doubts..

He bought from microcenter and they have pretty sweet customer service (plus he paid for warranty.

We are going to switch boards and cpu's and see what happens. If that fails then its definately his psu.

Try with only one stick furthest from CPU,also check both TPU and EPU switches are disabled by default(don't want them stuck halfway between on and off).

Still possible could be CPU.

Tried these before. Nope.

It could be the CPU..I don't feel like taking my computer apart to try a swap.

Well at that point (which im sure you knew we were coming to) we can't help you. RMA the CPU and hope it isn't the board or psu that is faulty

If the fans spin, but it isn't booting, the heatsink backplate might be touching the back of the motherboard causing a short. I have a ASUS P8Z68-V LE and I had a similar problem. The solution was to use the heatsink's included electrically-neutral plastic spacers between the motherboard and the backplate. That solved it for me.

tiny scuff on CPU pads means its been dropped -
either preventing good socket pin contact or one of the socket pins is also bent out of alignment or touching another

That means a new CPU may fix it
Or it may mean a new mobo (socket) will also be needed

Is it possible to get a macro pic of the "scuff" ? - I'm curious

I had a similar issue with the same board. I have 2 sticks mem and had to place them opposite to what the instruction manual said. I have one mem stick in the slot closest to the cpu, a blank one, another mem stick, and a blank one. That took care of my problem.
