Hi, I am in purchasing a Dolby Digital Surround Sound Headphones. Can the Realtek ALC892 pass along the Dolby Digital information through the motherboard optical cable or do I need to buy a new sound card? I have the Asus P8 Z77-V LK motherboard. Thank you.

It is always possible to do this with spdif, but I think what you have to ask is are your applications outputting this format? otherwise, you need to use an audio encoder, like dolby digital live.

Yes, if you are watching a DVD or Bluray that is already encoded in Dolby Digital 5.1 / EX then it will pass this through the optical SPDIF cable to a receiver or your headphones.

However, like mindbomb up above says if the content is not pre-encoded then you will need a real time encoding like DTS Connect or Dolby Digital Live.
