XPsp3. I am going to try to keep this short, but can't promise. I built this system about 6 weeks ago, and initially had a serious audio problem. I could not get any audio from the mobo, so I installed a Soundblaster card I had lying around. Well, never got the SB card working (didn't have drivers), but all of a sudden the onboard audio started to work so I gave that SB card to a friend.

Yesterday I turned on the computer and it would not go past the ASUS splash screen. Also would not boot to safe mode. Just stayed in a loop. Looking back, I think I had deleted a system file. I could get into the BIOS, but of course the settings were all the working settings the comp had been running on.

OK, I bit the bullet and formatted the C: partion. XP would not install, so after about 5 attempts I deleted all the partitions and formatted the entire drive. XP then installed with no problems. Everything is going fine except no onboard audio again. Device manager says everything is good. It shows legacy audio drivers. When I try to re-install drivers from the mobo CD, I keep getting a message that no HD audio device is connected. Went to the Asus website and tried drivers from there and get the same message. I don't use the front HD audio ports, and don't have those ports connected to the mobo. I could buy a PCI SB card and try it, but hate to spend the money when the onboard has been fine.

I KNOW there is non-HD onboard audio, I have been using it for over a month, but it doesn't show up in the BIOS- only the VIA HD shows up. This is driving me crazy. Is anyone using this mobo besides me? There sure isn't much info on the web.

Would appreciate any ideas. Thanks. I really hate to try Asus support. Had a lot of bad experience with it about 7 years ago.

I have sound!

Had breakfast early this morning with the guy I gave the SB card to, and he offered it back. Picked it up and fought for two hours trying to get it recognized. I finally saw the problem-- this Coolermaster case (NV-334-KWN1-GP BK RT). At the rear of the case where the card is screwed in, it sits too high and was not allowing the card to fully seat. Pulled card out, bent it, booted, and new hardware was recognized. Of course, the driver pack fron Creative said it couldn't see an SB card. Fortunately I have always kept an active account with Driver Robot and used it to get the driver. Driver Robot did not find any onboard audio problem though, so still don't know what that is about.

So other than feeling like an "indian giver", I'm happy.
