Asus P6T with i7 940 high temperature problem

I recently put together a new computer using the Asus P6t Deluxe (804 bios) with a core i7 using the vigor monsoon III heatsink. With default bios settings my computer idle's around 40C an usually under load hits 70C, but when I run prim 95 it will hit 90c plus and the interesting things is my computer shows no sign of trying to slow down with these high temps.

I'm concerned there is a problem with the mounting of my heatsink but if there was wouldn't I see much higher idle temps? Could this be a problem with reading temps from the CPU?

First, does your heatsink feel warm/hot to the touch?
If not, you do not have sufficient thermal transfer happening.

Try re-mounting the HSF and ensure the thermal paste is adequate.

90C is WAY too hot. Why doesn't your BIOS alarm?

I measured the temperature on my heat sink with a temperature gun and it was 80C so there probably wasn't any good heat transfer. When I took of the heat sink it looks like I may have spread the themal paste to thin since I only saw a light layer on the CPU and nothing on the heat sink.

So I cleaned the CPU and and used the Arctic Silver method instead and now it works so much better. I now idle in the 30s and when I run prime 95 and I end up around 60 after a while, before I would get to 90+ in about 15 seconds.

Thanks for all your help
