OC on a P5W DH, MB won't post for FBS beyond 360 1:1, have to enable SPD to go beyond, which always gives crappy timming. is there anyway to manully set mem timing while OC to 400+fbs? memory is OCZ 4-5-4-15 rated @DDR800, 2.1V.
Another problem, i have a SATA and a PATA HDDs, what's the optimal set up? BIOS recoganizes the SATA as primary IDE, while not dectecting the PATA, in windows they both work fine, wtf, the OS is in the SATA. What's the optimal BIOS setting for my HDDs? Do i need to do some rearrange in HDD jumpers, can't figure out the asus bios .

Thanks for help.

re: SPD required after 360
This is a well known issue with this board.

re: PATA detection
If you have your PATA HD connected to the black IDE port, that's the 3rd party JMicron controller. Since I've never used the JMicron controller, I'm not sure what the normal behavior should be. Perhaps, the main BIOS screen only lists devices found on the ICH7R SATA/PATA controller.

phile is *almost right.* First, the blue IDE connector is for optical drives only. (stated in the mannual) Connect IDE HDDs to the black IDE connector.

WRT having to enable SPD for higher FSB than 360, I am very puzzled with the 'known issue' explanation in that I have had no problem with memory timings and high FSB, except where things crap out due to the obvious limit of components. This is with 2 P5W-DH boards. Can you check if your memory is utilizing Micron ICs? If so (even if not), I'd try giving the max VDIMM and VMCH. The following configurations have worked for me without a hiccup. Not even once.

  • 266FSB: DDR2-800 / 3-3-3 (3:5) / 2.20V
    266FSB: DDR2-1066 / 4-4-3 (1:2) / 2.35V
    400FSB: DDR2-800 / 3-3-3 (1:1) / 2.35V
    400FSB: DDR2-1000 / 4-4-3 (4:5) / 2.40v
    425FSB: DDR2-850 / 3-4-3 (1:1) / 2.40V
And many other timings in between. If you're afraid of high voltages, have a fan blowing onto the modules. Make sure to flash the BIOS to 1407. It allows multiplier changes and it's the only BIOS that lets me do 4:5 @400FSB.

That's a pretty kickass timing you have there Lopri, sure you have some serious memory module, don't think i can crank my ocz near that, the spec says the max is 2.2v, guess i'll be alright at 2.4 ish, some DDR can go up to 3.2v, don't DDR2 will do much worse.
Performance wish, you think i am better off at 333mzh with tight timing or 400+ with crappy latency?

At what FSB? Also how crappy timgs are we talking about? Check the following review out. As a general rule of thumb, I wouldn't go past CL4 no matter what frequency. (i.e. no CL5)

so, what memory is capable of doing ddr800 while keep 3-3-3 timing stable? I've been looking alround, couldn't find any in Canada.

Sorry I'm not in a position to make a recommendation when it comes to memory purchase. My sticks have gone up in price by $100+ since my purchase, and I haven't bought memory after my first 2 sets.
