I'm hearing something to do with PCI Express bottlenecks or something. Can someone tell me whether my motherboard would be able to manage Crossfire 2 x 4850 all right? Or is it best to stick with a 1 GPU (4870) solution till I get a better motherboard?

i was also wondering about the same thing. according to tweaktown's review, even the PCI-E 2.0 8x (effectively 16x PCI-E 1.x) lanes are a bottleneck. i am still awaiting other reviews regarding this issue.

As much as that board is one of my all time favorites, I have to be honest and say that it'll hold down some of CF performance. When I tested a HD 3850, using the second PCIe slot alone gave about ~10% less performance. For HD 3850, the CF bridges might help out a bit but HD 4850 is almost as twice as fast as HD 3850. You will be losing some performance.
