Asus P5Q Pro Turbo motherboard Graphics Card Options

Hi All,

I have an Asus P5Q Pro Turbo motherboard with a Q9300 CPU, 8GB RAM and Radeon R7 250X Graphics card in a HTPC Case.

I am looking to upgrade my graphics card as I want to watch 4K movies now. From reading the forums and similar questions, good cards are 1050 Ti and GTX 660 but these recommendations are mainly for gaming.
Would these cards be good for watching 4K blurays?

Thanks

You can't watch 4K Blu-rays with your present processor. For UHD Blu-ray playback, you need to have Windows 10 64-bit with the Nov. 2015 update and a 7th gen Intel Kaby-Lake or newer CPU that has support for Software Guard Extensions(SGX) and enabled in the BIOS, and you need to drive a HDCP 2.2 display using the integrated GPU.

4K videos in general, like 4K YouTuibe? Just throw in a GT 1030 GDDR5 2GB card. ($90-100)

4K Blu-Ray? Like, real honest-to-goodness discs, with DRM shoved up them where the sun don't shine? Good luck. Buy a Sony set-top player.

Thanks for your replies guys, appreciate it.

Are you able to recommend any network streamers that can play ISO images over the network?

some cards require UEFI, so it's something to keep in mind, I know the R7 370 I used didn't work on older PCs because of that

Do you remember the motherboards they used?

IME, newer cards mostly have issues on older OEM motherboards. I've seen alot of cases where people with for example an Asus AM3 or LGA 1156 motherboard have upgraded to a GTX 1050 Ti with no issues.

The most troubled platform seems to be LGA 1155, most of them require a BIOS update to work. I've also seen some who haven't gotten BIOS updates claiming they still got it to work by forcing the Legacy BIOS.

Also 4K videos from GoPro and bridge cameras. If the GT 1030 works for that purpose, then that would work for me. I can just watch 4K content from Netflix etc. on the TV itself. Not ideal but better than having to get another HTPC built or buying an Oppo 203, both of which are out of my budget at the moment.
