Asus P5Q-Deluxe issue with SATA DVD-RW

I have had my system running with no problems for over a year and decided to add a Lightscribe burner. I got a Samsung SH-S223Q, which is a SATA unit; I also have an NEC ND-3550A which is an IDE unit. I have SATA configuration set to AHCI in BIOS.

The new Samsung drive seems to be able to read and write just fine, but.... XP(service pack 3) recognizes it as a removable device that can be "stopped" or "removed" via the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon that it opens in the System Tray. Also, Windows Explorer shows it as being a DVD-RAM instead of a DVD-RW... like the NEC drive.

I have had zero luck in getting help from Samsung.

I am hoping that there is a BIOS setting I am missing that will resolve this minor problem.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Zane

AHCI is only good when you want hot swap function and native command queuing for the hard drive. that's probably why your samsung drive is recognized as a usb device and can be hot swapped.

in your case, ther is no reason for AHCI mode. just configure sATA as IDE mode and everything should be okay.

Thanks a lot. That did eliminate the removable device part of the problem, but Windows Explorer still lists it as a DVD-RAM instead of a DVD-RW.

Guess I'll leave SATA Configuration set to IDE unless some other problem develops.
