Asus P5N32-SLI Premium and QX9650

Hi guys, I'm a first timer in the forum.

I realised that I'm still using a single core P4 processor one night rendering a 4 second animation, it was going to take me over 10 hours (at 30fps). So, I said to myself maybe it's time for an upgrade.

I currently have a P5N32-SLI Premium/WiFi-AP motherboard, and I want the quad-core QX9650. I was thinking about the QX9770 but there seems to be problems with the heat it generates, and X48 boards are still new so I'd better give it some time.

My questions are:

1. Do I have to buy a new motherboard for QX9650?

2. If so, which would you recommend? I've checked a few (Asus Maximus Extreme & Gigabite X38 boards) but I'm not sure which is the best. Idealy I would want a stable motherboard which leaves me a fair amount of space for future upgrades.

That's all, thanks in advance for any comment and sugguestion.

Welcome to AT 🙂.

Well I can't see the your motherboard listed for QX9650 support here so I would assume you'd need a new mobo. What is your budget? From the looks of the boards you are considering you'd be in the X38 price range in which case of the two you listed it comes down to personal preference as both will perform admirably and about the same with a QX9650.

If you could stretch the budget a little further I'd recommend the X48 over the X38 which is being phased out. The X48 runs cooler and OC's quite a bit better than the X38's not to mention a standout BIOS with the Rampage Formula accounting for TrD adjustments (which I would think you'd be interested in as the QX9650 is an overclockers CPU- see AT's review article here).

Thanks Sylvanas... I just read on the net that X48 boards don't support SLI, but I have a GeForce 7950 GT at the moment, I'll have to switch to ATI if I were to utilize a pair of GPU?

You are correct. No Intel desktop chipsets support SLI, only Crossfire. So if you want SLI support you have to buy an Nvidia chipset based mobo. If this was what you wanted to do I'd suggest 750i based boards like the MSI P7N.
