ASUS P5N-E SLI Won't post

Hi there,

I just picked up an Asus P5N-E SLI board from NewEgg, along with 4 gigs of Patriot DDR2-800 RAM and an E6600.

The thing won't post. I read up that it was ultra-sensitive to memory timings and so went out to get some basic Kingston DDR2-533 memory -- still the same problem.

I've got everything inside disconnected that can be disconnected. It's just the motherboard, CPU, power supply, video card, and memory - I even disconnected the add'l USB and AC97 connectors.

It turns on fine and then beeps once, pauses, and then beeps again. The best I can determine is that that's a memory issue, but I've already tried replacing the memory. I also tried replacing the video card (an eVGA 7900 KO) with a different card (a 6200, I think) - same thing. If I pull out the card entirely, it gives me 1 long beep followed by 3 short ones, which I think is 'there's no video card in here.'

Any suggestions?

Yes, the 1 long beep followed by 3 short ones is due to the video card not being in.

When the video card is in, do you get just 2 beeps, or does it keep repeating?

When the video card is in, it just does the two beeps. I get the same two beeps regardless of which RAM I use - the Patriot DDR2-800 (which is not listed in their compatibility guide) or the Kingston DDR2-533 (which is listed); doesn't matter which slot, which channel, whether I put in one or two. Same two beeps.

Have you tried putting the RAM into different slots? Do you have 4 1Gb sticks? Trying putting 2 in instead of 4?

I have 4 1GB sticks of the Patriot DDR2-800 and 2 1 gig sticks of the Kingston DDR2-533. I've tried putting in one stick, two sticks, same channel, different channel - whatever permutation I could.

I think the thing's either hosed or else so sensitive to memory timings that there's almost no point in bothering. Supposedly a new BIOS fixes that but I can't very well flash it if it won't even post.

I spoke to ASUS and they actually said that -both- types of memory won't work in the P5N-E! Yikes!

Anybody know a good place in NYC that sells good DDR2 memory? :/
