I recently purchased an Onkyo receiver and I hooked my computer to it using a coaxial cable using the onboard sound on my P5N32-E SLI Plus motherboard.
My question is this : using this type of connection, would I improve the quality of sound by buying a sound card? I am only concerned with the sound of music in stereo, not games or surround sound of any type.

No need to get an X-fi. Just get a Chaintech AV-710 for all your digital audio needs...plus bitperfect to boot

Thanks for the suggestions.
I'd need a card with coaxial output so the Chaintech card wouldn't work for me. As far as the X-fi goes, I really wouldn't want a coaxial cable plugged into the front of my computer all the time either.

Any others with a rear coaxial output that would beat my onboard sound?
I actually switched back to my Gigabyte DS3 motherboard so now I'm using Realtek onboard audio if that makes any difference and I don't think it does.

you know what's funny now, is I'm thinking why don't you just build a drive bay in the back of your machine and use the Creative bay for that matter.

that would be such a super cool experiment, I'm thinking of trying it myself now. because I saw an Alienware computer at Best Buy about five years ago with the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum and I was like... it looks kind of cool that the audio plug ins are in the front... but I never though otherwise, so all these years you stick with what a company gives you as far as standards, or you create your own. alienware is a damn ripoff by the way, not like any of you didn't know that though, just needed to say it.

this one isn't creative, but the card looks pretty bad ass. you won't get the best framerates, but the audio quality this one produces seem to be genuine to that of M-Audio, another good brand of soundcards.

but are you sure that you can't do a digital out from the X-fi Music to coaxial conversion? if you get a high enough quality bypass converter, it shouldn't deteriorate anything running through the wires, unless you're very picky.

Is that supposed to be a bad thing? ;)
I have been seriously considering the Auzentech cards with coaxial output. I may run up to my local Microcenter store tonight to have a look around.

I own the X-Plosion...its a bit of overkill without the purpose of some gaming...but it works great for digital out for music which is mostly what I use it for.
