Howdy,

My old box is having disk controller problems, so I'm looking to build something new. Been a while (ten years) since I put together a box from components instead of buying a barebones, and from reading comments at Newegg, it looks like not all motherboard chipsets and controllers are supported properly in Linux -- surprising, by now I thought the hardware people would be fully on the bandwagon, but I guess not.

I'd like to stick with Asus for a stable midrange box. Nothing special, just needs to run solidly with either Win2K (preferred) or XP (worst case) in addition to Debian Linux.

How's the Asus P5KPL-CM? It uses the Intel G31 and ICH7 chips. Video is Intel GMA 3100. Audio is VIA VT1708B. Full specs are at the link:

I doubt I'll be adding any cards to it; the onboard stuff is fine for my purposes (web browsing, word processing, a little music, probably playing some DVDs).

If this isn't a good motherboard choice for Linux, can anyone recommend a decent and cheap midrange mobo?

Thanks!
