ASUS P5K-E memory problems?

I was just about decided on buying the ASUS P5K-E. I need firewire, I have the Q6600, I'm not gaming, this will be for photoshop and video editing. But then I read this comment on the Newegg reviews for the motherboard:

"it didn't work with 4x G-skill 2GB memory sticks; it can only run 667Mhz if all 4 memory socket is being used"

The poster said he had confirmed this with ASUS tech support. I'm planning on using Vista 64bit and starting with 4 GB memory, then moving to 8 GB for photoshop use in the future.

Can anyone confirm this memory usage? I've tried to access the ASUS site this morning but I can't get through.

My other mb choice is the Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P. Any comments or experience on which of these two you prefer?

Thanks for your help.

I think that's a load of bs. Mine has 4 sticks of 8500 ballistix and is running plenty higher than that, altho can't remember what its set at now. I'm very happy with this board so far (two weeks) and have an e6850 very comfortable @3.78ghz.

Should work with no problems. It may default to lower speeds/voltage but once you boot up you can fix that.

Thanks for the quick replies, and especially for the actual experience.

BassBomb, one of your systems has the Antec NSK4480. How do you like it? I've been thinking about the NSK 6580 with the 430W PS. Provantage has it for like $68. It's either that or the Antec Solo which is going to run more than the 6580 without a PS.

NSK4480 is pretty different from Solo/6580 I didn't like the NSK too much. However, my Sonata which is closer to the cases you mentioned is really nice 🙂

Either one would be a great choice NSK/SOLO are a little smaller inside

The 667 is a divider setting. If you're overclocking it's a nonissue as you will use a lower divider anyway once you up the FSB.

I've got the previous board - the P5B-E, and yeah, when using 4GB+, you can set DDR2 to a max seting of '667 MHz', meaning if you're at stock FSB you will have your DDR2 at 667.

That is not right though, you should be able to run at DDR2 800 with 4GB+ and FSB at 333.

It works when not at 4GB+ for me right now

I have a p5k deluxe with a q6600. Its currently running at 3.6ghz at 4.5V. 4gb ddr2 1066 5-5-4-10 2t. Excellent board to overclock. I don't know what u guys are doing wrong with it. I could run 3.0ghz at 2.125V easily.
