ASUS P5E-VM and Ram

Getting a P5E-VM soon and wonder if my Corsair XMS2 C4 2gig kit will work fine. I've read something about the strap that down-converts 800mHz C4 to 667mHz, is this true?

If the Corsair seems to be a problem I will pick up fresh Ram since they're almost giving it away these days.

I will try to hold out for an E8400, but may be tempted by the $200 Q6600. Yes, I plan to OC.

THanks

It should work fine. The straps mostly serve to provide different sets of memory dividers. It will likely try to figure things out on its own when overclocked, but mannual tweaking is of course possible. If you plan to overclock FSB, you will likely have to adjust the dividers manually.

The board is excellent and extremely easy to overclock, but it isn't meant for a benchmark record. E8400 would be better strictly for its lighter power requirement, but it doesn't mean that the board wouldn't be able to handle Q6600. 9x400 with an E8400 or 8x400 with a Q6600 should be achieved without touching anything. If you're using the on-board video, you may need to give extra voltages for the NB.

Thanks lopri!

Hopefully an owner of this mobo will post that they're using Corsairs, but I think I will pick up more anyway since its cheap. And if I run 400 MHz FSB they won't be OC'd. ( DDR2 800 )

I'm not going to be too greedy with the OC, and you've pretty much nailed my targets. I will probably use on-board HDMI to DVI at the start and then I'm open to filling the PCIx16 with the flavor of the month.
