ASUS P5B WIFI-AP

Looking at buying an ASUS P5B deluxe w/WIFI-AP...

Current setup: cable internet through Linksys WRT54G w/ethernet to primary computer, wireless coverage sketchy in big house.

If I buy the ASUS P5B board, could I: run cable internet directly to primary computer, then use the onboard WIFI as an access point instead? Any problems with sharing the internet connection (i.e. NOT enabling ICS in Windows...) with AP?

Ideally: could I then relocate my Linksys router to elsewhere in the house and use as a repeater for greater wireless range?

Thanks for your collection wisdom -- just not sure about this onboard WIFI.

If you do not enable ICS, what would do the Routing? Access Point do not Router!

That's what I was wondering -- is the AP done in hardware (built-in router) or software (ICS)?

OK -- what if I DO enable ICS? Will the Linksys router work as a repeater in this scenario?

You are mixing terms here.

Router: A machine that routes packets at Layer 3....SOHO "Routers" also preform some level if firewall and NAT (network address translation). Some have a build in AP

AP: Access Point, device that connects wireless to wired on the network. This device operates at Layer 2 (no routing) of the network

To get multiple computers on the network, you need a router (and usually NAT routing)

To connectect wireless computers to a wired network, you need an AP

So if you have wired network-> your comptuer running ICS (Software routing) -> wireless -> WRT in repeater mode (not sure if that is supported) then you could "extend" wireless.
