Asus P5B: Using AHCI = no SMART for HDDs?

I'm using an Asus P5B Deluxe (965 based, yeah it's old). I'm using AHCI mode for my hard drives, and when I do so I do not get SMART information (at boot or in Speedfan). If I change to IDE mode I have an option in BIOS for SMART.

Is this a known issue with ICH7R or something?

Really? I thought it was useful for detecting potential fatal HDD issues ahead of time? Nice to monitor temps at least.

Also I just realized the P5BD = ICH8R not 7.
