Asus P5B-E or P5B Deluxe

Trying to decide which board to get once I sell my P5W DH Deluxe and get my e6400 and wanted to know which board is a better overclocker. I know both are very similar including 965 chipset, but from my understanding the Deluxe has 8-Phase Power Regulators. I'm going to be running some G.Skill D9s once I have the board and and cpu.

Thanx for any suggestions

Isnt the E version a C2 or second revision of the P5B-D? I hear its more stable than the D version.

i know those links silly. thats where im going to buy from. im really just looking at all the articles hear on anandtech and seein some overclocks with p5b-e and some with p5b deluxe. both seem to be pushin the 500+ fsb and thats what im wantin. with the 8x multi 6400 i know i may need more radiator, but im willing to go there for a 4 ghz c2d

The only thing that really affects overclocking between the two is voltage.

Max vdimm is only 2.1V on the P5B-E, which is great for moderate OCing, but not for heavy OCing. (P5B Deluxe = 2.45V)

Also vdroop is far worse on the P5B-E than the P5B deluxe, making achieving stability a tad more challenging.

P5B Deluxe has additional voltage settings over the P5B-E.

P5B-E has:
vcore
vdimm
FSB Termination voltage

P5B Deluxe has:
vcore
vdimm
FSB Termination voltage
Northbridge voltage
Southbridge voltage
ICH voltage

Basically put, for heavy OCing, get the P5B Deluxe.
The P5B-E is superb, actually easier to OC IMO, but won't allow for anywhere close to as extreme RAM tweaking.

just so you know, if you're looking at the P5B-E you're probably not going to get v1.02G if you buy from newegg.

I'd also get the P5B-Deluxe since the supposedly-revised P5B-E is nowhere to be seen.

You pretty much can't from what i understand.

It seems Asus decided to release a few, but then kinda cancelled it from what i can tell.

sounds like a good way to clear out old inventory, make people think they will get the updated board, but clear out your old inventory

i wouldnt follow that thread's advice. i am no hardcore overclocker but i read a crapload before i even dared try to OC my first board 3 years ago. seems back then less people were into it and there was better advice.

this guy in that thread advises to immediately put everything on the highest voltage and then start to OC. that goes against everything i have ever learned about it.

every overclocker advice i heard from the seasoned pros 3 years back was to try to get the best oc with only the voltage needed - NEVER to just go willy nilly with voltage and start from there. start low then go up.

that thread is ridiculous IMO unless you could care less about the lifespan of your gear.

Xtremesytems.org

Not lightoverclocking.org

That thread isn't meant for newbs, though it does contain good info.

well if you read it most of the people responding are 1st posters lol

i dunno, ive read a lot of stuff from overclocking dedicated sites, and most arent scared of voltage but they sure dont say just max out your BIOS's voltage, make a sandwich, and see where she goes!

Alot of the oldtimers will also tell you to let a new rig burn in for 24-48hours too before OCing but alot of folks dont bother to wait anymore. I think thats one of the problems people have nowadays. They dont even wait to find out if its stable or not. They just go straight to overclocking after a few minutes or maybe an hour.

You should know about the board before you start questioning the methods of one of the best overclockers on XS... the ONLY two voltages he was talking about were the NB voltage, and the FSB voltage, in both of which the maxes are LOW ENOUGH on the P5B-Deluxe that they can be set to their max without a significant decrease in the life of the hardware.

ive read the advice of the best overclockers on plenty of other forums and they never said start off with the highest voltage on any board. the goal is always to get the best oc and raising the voltage going up. not to the highest first. if you do that you are going in reverse.

ill stick with the 20 other guides i have seen and pass that advice along, you can have your own opinion as well.

Or if they're like me, they switch from an E6400 @ 7x486 to an E6300 @ 7x486, & run overclocked right off the bat w/o even reseting CMOS :D

/not recommended for everyone; don't try this at home :p

Get the P5B Deluxe. It has better cooling solution, 8 phase regulators and is more expensive.
I have one and did some serious overclocking without sacrificing stability.

I'd go with the P5B-Deluxe as well - actually, I just got mine the other day ;)

20 other P5B-Deluxe guides... where?

This is specific to this board.
