I just recently got an Asus P5B-E and much to my dismay, the CPU fan connector is 4 pins. My CPU fan on my Thermaltake Silent 775 is 3 pins. Apparently the 4th pin is the control for the fan PWM. So my CPU fan spins at maximum RPM (loud) all the time and the motherboard fan control does nothing.
PWM is simple stuff and you don't need a 4th fourth wire to use it to control motor speed. And in fact the chassis fan connectors are still 3 pins and the motherboard PWM control works on those just fine. I read somewhere that only the new Intel spec four wire CPU fans with some silly PWM chip on the fan will work. Is this true? Is there a mod that will allow me to use the MB fan speed control with a 3 wire fan? Thanks.
