5B-E running 2x 1gb Patriot PC2-5300
Just added 2x 1gb Patriot PC2-6400
Question 1: Voltage
I'm running all the memory at DDR2-666 speed w/ mem volt 1.90v @ 4-4-4-12
I didn't realize when I ordered the new PC2-6400 Patriots that they say they are 2.2v chips. I'm not sure what the official voltage of the PC2-5300 chips are, but my current bios setting is 1.90v. Could this mismatch be a problem? So far it seems stable, but I haven't done overnight tests.
Question 2: 2496MB Free
I know, it's been asked a billion times. Why can't I see all 4GB? I know why already, so that doesn't need an explanation.
I'm on XP Pro 32-bit, my vid card is brand new 512MB 8800GT, and all else I have is an Audigy, 1 SATA hard disk, and a DVD burner.
Bios posts 2496MB, windows reports the same. Never do I see more than that. I would expect to see a bit more than that. (And I have seen people getting this same amount of RAM free with a 1GB video card installed on same mobo -- I've got a 512MB)
I replaced the 512MB 8800GT with a 256MB 7950GT and now I have 3008MB of memory available instead of 2495MB... Why would 256MB more memory on the graphics card take away 513MB from my memory limit?
By the way, I tested the memory pairs separately and in different slots. There doesn't seem to be anything bad with the memory. Also, memtest 86 only shows up to 2496MB as well.
In this case, I'd rather have the more memory than the 8800GT (and I JUST bought it!). There's got to be something else I can disable to reclaim some of this memory. Any ideas how to do this anyone?
