Asus P5B Deluxe or Gigabyte DS3

I do like asus boards, but i havent heard anything bad about the ds3's except for getting the bios up to f4 but after that its all good.

So which board is better, that article said that the p5b/p5w were pretty much the best board for c2d. Im ordering my system in a about 10 days and very conflicted. also there is talk of the intel bad-axe board

The Intel board I wouldn't get if I were you. It depends on your budget really as the Asus is likely more stable generally speaking, but the DS3 is alot cheaper. Corsair memory is the most compatable available right now.

ok if the asus is more stable is it able to oc as well as the ds3. ill have a e6400 i plan to get it around 2.8.

Also, my DS3 has no moving parts on the motherboard, so I'm not sure what the "passive cooling on the components" claim is about. No moving parts = no noise = for the win.

EDIT: I wanted to add some URLs for pictures of the DS3 vs. the DS4. The change between the boards is quite drastic. It's much more than just adding a heatpipe...

(Yes, the 2nd URL indeed has "motherboars" in it, not "motherboard". And yes, it works. Apparently Gigabyte would rather just make some new directory with crap in it, rather than actually fix their URLs to be consistent. Then again, their website is ATROCIOUS...)

This makes me wonder if I should return my DS3 and wait until the DS4 becomes available for sale.

From the pic, that DS4 board has 2 x PCI-Ex16 slots.. is it Crossfire compatible? That design looks much different than the DS3 and has much better integrated passive cooling.

That's not even relevant since it's a prebuilt system.

Not really, is a system made with DYS parts. It is valid for us.

Not really, is a system made with DYS parts. It is valid for us.

No it isn't because you have to imagine EVERYTHING from the type of memory used to the video card used was hand picked to not give issues. Now when you build a system yourself you don't have the luxury of knowing everything will work 100% all the time (assuming you aren't overclocking).

You should do some research on both mobos problems. There are many threads about both at:

Check the issues each board has and find also which RAM is working and not. Do not rely on 2 or 3 opinions from here.

The second slot is only 4x, not XFire ready. You can use it to plug another card and have a multi monitor setup.

Some people report being able to run SLI with hacked drivers even at 4x, but I don't know the performance impact. I don't know if hacked drivers would work for ATI.

The P5B Deluxe has, in general, been a better overclocker (above 450Mhz FSB). Although few people run that way. If this is a factor for you then the P5B Deluxe would be a good pick.

Hey guys, so i'm currently looking at Core 2 duo motherboards and am on a budget but know the importance of a stable motherboard. I would really like to purchase the P5B-Deluxe since its known as the best c2d mobo out right now but i have a lian li v1000 case which is btx...... so the heatpipe cooling would be pretty bad i would assume. Is there any other route i could go? I've read a lot about the DS3 and it seems that a lot of people like it and a lot of people hate it. From what i've read so far, the board seems ot have a lot of compatibility issues with mainly memory and stability is 1st for me and overclocking 2nd.

Anyway, i'm currently thinking about purchasing a E6300 or E6600 depending on the price/performance ratio. So far, the E6300 seems like the better deal at $180 while the E6600 is $300+.

Sorry for the semi-long post.
Summary: Lian Li V1000 BTX issue makes it impossible to use the p5b-deluxe
DS3 is pretty tempting but i dont want a headache.
Any other options?

I have the Gigabyte S3 (the lower of the gigabytes) and it has been great. Overclocked and runs better then my last board a Asus.

Another very happy S3 user here oc's to 3.2 e6400 with out a problem temps are good and so far folding 1 week straight compleatly stable see my sig for specs.
