ASUS P5A motherboard problem

this is my first post, so be gentle.... i've got an ASUS P5A motherboard w/ AMD K6-2 450 processor in my no-name system. I'm having problems getting it to recognize my new 40G WD harddrive. I set the bios to "AUTO" for secondary drive and it just hangs trying to see it. I've tried so many combonations of primary/secondary master/slave and nothing works. The drive is okay, I stuck it in my Dell and didn't have any problems. Any hints as to what I need to look for? thanks, Todd.
