NFS4 yep thats cool! What if someone has rounded IDE cables already? Also does that coverter work good you think for currect ide HDs? I mean would it be better just to have a serial HD and not have to use that converter at all? Or just have rounded cables?

I have rounded cables, but these simply blow even rounded cables away!! Remember, Serial-ATA cables are small and compact from end to end. Rounded ATA-100 cables are very large at the base, then thin down and get wider again at the other end. Even then at its thinnest point, rounded ATA100 cables are still not as thin and compact as Serial-ATA connectors.

Also, my rounded ATA-100 cables have some kind of rubber-feeling material around the wires which is rather hard to bend and move around. Serial-ATA cables totally alleviate this.

Considering that all ATA-66/100/133 hard drives are compatible with all IDE interfaces on any motherboard, I don't think that there will be any issues using the converter card. Also, it may be a while before native Serial-ATA drives are released in volume and in enough variety...so converter cards will be necessary for quite some time. I mean, I just bought a Western Digital 800JB and I'm NOT giving it up anytime soon :D

Actually, you can find a few serial ATA HD's already..................there's another review of this board I was reading the other day, but it basicly says about the same things so I won't link it....................I WILL be having this board with the serial HD's as soon as it's available!:)

ToBeMe thanks :) Hope they are not too much more expersive than IDE HDs. I am guessing they are not if not around the same prices. I have a feeling the brand for the HDs with seral ATA already is Seagate hehe. I really want Maxtor and WD to make a serial ATA HD! Espically WD like with 80 gig , 120 gig, and a 200 gig serial ATA HD with 8 mb of cache!

There are no serial ATA drives for sale now. The Seagate Barracuda V won't be out until fall(which means spring). Anyway, I'll be happy to let the first wave of early adopters sort out all the glitches and absorb the R&D costs.

I know Seagate was the leader in having them avalable and Maxtor was close on its heals............I'm still looking for the exact link as it was in another forum..........seems like the drive I'm thinking of especially was a Seagate "V" something and was a 7200rpm model at 80GB. I'm going to keep looking for the link............

The Barracuda V with ATA100 should be out soon. The SATA version with 8MB cache should be out Q4/02.

  • SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. - June 24, 2002 - Seagate today launched the Barracuda ATA V disc drive, introducing the most advanced data-density ever: it's the first hard drive to achieve 120 Gbytes using only two discs, giving Seagate a significant technology advantage in high-performance PC storage. Barracuda ATA V serial ATA disc drives should be available in limited quantity begining early Q3 '02.

jaeger66 yep! I am happy another HD brand is joining WD on the 8 mb of cache! Now Maxtor should join in and offer 8mb of cache HDs too!

Wherever you got that from is wrong.

"Barracuda ATA V will begin shipping next month with the Ultra ATA/100 interface; the native Serial ATA option will be available this fall."

I wouldn't think so, it will be a long time before parallel ATA disappears from motherboards.

jaeger66 cool that is a very neat case! Did you use rounded cables on anything? I see mostly the big IDE cables but thats still good and neat!

hmmm nfs4, do you notice that in the quake 3 benchmarks the intel DDR chipsets and Sis DDR chipsets are neck and neck. There 4G4A is ahead by only 1 frame compared to the P4S533. Now in the Drone Z benchmark the 4G4A gets trounced by 14 FPS by the SiS P4s533. The 4G4A takes the lead by a couple points in 3DMark 2001SE but once again, you can hardly call this a lead. My point is and i've been saying this for a long time, in real world applications you'll never know the difference between an SiS 645DX chipset and an Intel i845x chipset. THe only differences are when it comes down to overclocking. In fact, if these benchmarks are accurate the SiS chipset is faster all around. So, do you think these benchmarks are accurate or is there something wrong here, because that highly optimized memory controller should be pulling in faster frame rates and such?
