As a previous P4S8X owner, rma'd the board back, has Asus come up with a solution to their problems - vCore instability - wont run DDR333 and random reboots. I tell you, that was a nice board if they ever got it to run right.

Bad SiS648 Chipsets?
From the Rumor Mill. Apparently there has been a number of complaints about the SiS648 chipsets, most centering around the ASUS P4S8X mainboard that utilizes this chipset. While we didn?t see any issues with our board here, there are many people who have, and there seems to be a big issue with the chipsets ready to come to a head here. I got this today, and it seems to have some validity based on just what we have heard around here. There are other sites that have the same information listed below, I'm just not sure where this is going at this point, but we want to keep you in the loop.

1. The original stepping of the SiS 648 ran DDR333 worse than was expected, much worse in fact. Supposedly ASUS got a hold of these chips (and so you can guess where the P4S8X issues have been coming from).

2. Within the last several weeks, new steppings of the SiS 648 have been mass produced and boards based around them (Gigabyte's 8SG667 and now AOpen's board) released. EpoX didn't get them however, and I don't know why.

(UPDATE) We are also hearing there is a fix out there ready for the ASUS boards and might be coming down the pipe fairly soon...again, we HEARD that, so we are not sure on specifics.

I'm having the same issues. Totally random reboots and programs crashing left and right.

I had the RAM speed set to "AUTO", but have since switched to 133. Haven't had an issue yet.

It really bums me out that I can't run this board at the speeds the RAM was intended.

Any ideas on a fix date?

Well... I just updated my BIOS to 1004 and everything seems to be fixed!!! YEEHAWWWW!!!

I've been trying to figure everything out for the past month, to no avail. I guess I should have searched on these forums first. Well, I learned alot along the way.

Let me know if anyone has further unresolved issues with 1004. Everything seems to be working just fine for me. No random reboots and programs crashing left and right. Now I can finally get my computer set up the way I like it without fear of needing to re-install XP for the millionth time.
