Ok here we go. I turned off my computer last night and when I turned it on I'm getting this blue screen that says windows xp can't start, please revert back to a previous hardware configuration...blah blah blah. This is the second time this has happened. Both times the computer worked fine for about 2 months then suddenly I got this message. The first time I reformatted the drive and did a fresh install of Windows XP. This time I got valuable data on the hard drive and can't afford to simply do it. Any suggestions as to what the hell is going on? Should I update the bios? Anything help me out please!!
System Specs:
P4 1.8A @ 2.4
Geforce 4 TI 4400
Sound Blaster Audigy
512 Samsung ddr2700
Liteon 40x Burner
Liteon 16x DVD drive
60 Gig Maxtor

First thing I would try is to go into your BIOS and lower the FSB speed, resave the settings and reboot. If you cannot get into the BIOS, find the jumper and reset the BIOS to default settings with the jumper.
Other possibilities, just run them down one by one:
Perhaps your chip is not quite up to the task fo running 2.4 constantly.
That 512mb of memory is one stick, not 2 x 256mb, right?
Your heatsink is on solidly?
Any programs running in the background?
Have you defragmented your hard drive when needed?
How about a windows registry clean up utility or hard drive repair utility (Norton can run from DOS without Windows).
Virus check is negative?
Do a memory test while in DOS?
Run Prime or other test program once you get Windows back on, just to check out the systems stability.

Ok, I will try to answer your questions one by one. As for the Front Side Bus, I'll try that, but then why would the computer suddenly stop working, after performing flawlessly for over 2 months? The memory is 2x 256mb. The heatsink is on solidly the pc health is at 38C. There are no programs running in the background, because I never get into Windows. I get the bluescreen right after the boot.

the reason it would "stop working" after 2 months is because if it isnt a good OCer, you can be liquifying it in its own heat. turn the FSB down to normal, that always solves problems. other than that...i would start troubleshooting piece by piece.

take off all aux. components and add them 1 at a time. see which one is causing it to not boot. if THAT doesnt work, when get your stuff off and format.

if that is not a viable option, you can always go out on a limb and order a USB pen drive 128mb and install windows 98 on it or something. then you can boot to it and get your stuff off using a network of some sort.

you can get a fix for win98 to read NTFS if you have xp installed on that instead of FAT32.

wow, that would be a lot of work, but if you need the data then that is the way to go :)

Ok, backed the fsb down. No help. But I kind of gave the wrong impresion of the problem. Ok this is what is happening the computer boots, Windows Xp Home Logo comes up, the green bars start moving across the logo it sits there and then takes me directly to the boot selection screen where I have 30 seconds to choose how I want to boot the computer (ie. safe mode, command prompt) after I select a boot mode (it doesn't matter which, I've tried them all), it starts to load and the takes me right back to the boot selection screen. Without a reboot or anything, it just takes me right back there.
