I'm the proud new owner of P4S333 and 1.6A Northwood.

This board has a "ACR" slot which the manual says is for
modem, audio, and/or network devices.

Who makes these devices anyway  ?
Where do you get them?

I'd be interested in an integrated modem & network card
if one exists, even tho' I've already got seperate boards.

ALSO: Is the digital audio connector (SPDIF) some sort
of an industry standard pinout?... or do you have to buy
one of these thingys from Asus?... and how?

I saw a digital audio breakout board at my local Fry's, made
by Iwill, for $20, but it said it was for Iwill motherboards.
Nothing on the package suggested it could be used with
other motherboards.

Any other Asus P4 board owners out there know the answers?

it's tough to find ACR cards...i can't really tell you were to look though, i've always wondered myself. you might try a search around here though, i've seen similar posts.

As far as SPDIF, yes, it is a standard. most people use it to connect their soundcard to a dolby digital home theater receiver.

I'm looking for the SPDIF board too -- I looked at the IWILL specs/mobo manual and the ASUS P4S333 mobo manual and the SPDIF plug on the motherboards look identicial -- they both use the same chipset's as well -- it might be worth taking a chance and then returning it if it doesn't work

It won't (been there - done that)!

Actually... it WILL if you're willing to make a special cable to connect to the p4s333 motherboard, in several locations.

I took mine back and decided to simply add an RCA jack to the dual USB bracket that WAS included with the P4S333.
(I have not yet done this)

Somewhere on asusboards.com, someone posted a schematic of the coax interface - it is NOT simply a matter of connecting to SPDIFOUT and GND on the MoBo (although I DID do just that and got good sound out of my Boston BA735 digital speakers).

There is supposed to be a couple of 390 ohm (I think) resistors and a small cap (.01uF?)

FYI, here are pinouts for the Iwill superaudio adapter and Asus p4s333
(note that you'll also need +12V fotr the iwill that you can pick up from a fan connector.

IWILL-SUPERAUDIO
01: +12V

03: nc
04: SPDIF-O
05: SPDIF-I
06: GND

10: nc
11: SUBW

04: nc
05: RR
06: FR

ASUS-SPDIF1
01: GND
02: SPDIF_OUT
03: nc or blank
04: +5V
05: GND
06: SPDIF_IN

EDIT:
Here's a link and an attachment for that SPDIF interface schematic with the 2 resistors and a capacitor.

Note that 100 nF = 0.1uF
