ASUS P4R800VM & DELL 2005FPW issues

I have built a computer that has a P4 2.6 Ghz, ASUS P4R800VM motherboard. Video chipset is ATI Radeon 9100 IGP. The OS is Windows XP. The thing is, I recently purchased a DELL 2005FPW wide aspect flat panel monitor which has 4 USB ports on it. My problem is, the computer doesn't go past the motherboard screen (ASUS-P4R800VM-LOGO) if I start it with a USB device connected to the monitor. None of the devices are accessible, not even the ones that are connected to the CPU (for example the keyboard connected to CPU).

I am able to access the same devices if they are connected to the CPU instead of the monitor, and have the computer started. And also, I am able to access these devices when I hook them to the monitor after the computer has been started. It is just that the computer doesnt respond if I start it with the devices already hooked to the monitor

Devices I have used in testing:
I connected a DELL USB mice to one of the ports, and started the computer..
A digital camera & a webcam.

I contacted DELL, but support is rejected as this seems to be a strange problem & they washed their hands saying that I can access the ports as they seem to be working fine when the devices are hooked once the computer has already been started.

Any help is sincerely appreciated. Thanks for reading & I hope that there are some good debuggers out there!

I have seen older boards (1998 to 1999-era) hang at this point in POST with certain USB hubs attached. While I'm surprised a board this new shows the same symptoms, your first stop would be a BIOS update.

Thanks Peter, I will give that a shot and keep the thread updated. thanks for the pointer! I am reading upon how to update the BIOS from the mother board manufacture (asus) site. I found that each version is specific to a particular patch.. so how do I go about picking up a version to solve my problem. Here is the URL with all the BIOS version & desc. available. http://support.asus.com/search/search.a...800vm%20bios%20upgrade&SLanguage=en-us

Thanks.

You don't necessarily need to pick a certain BIOS. I always go with the latest, as any previous bios includes the patches in the latest BIOS as well. The only reason some people don't go to the latest BIOS's, is that some changes are not always taken well by the individual PC. I would recommend just grabbing the latest BIOS and giving it a shot. I flash all my PC's at work to the latest BIOS every now and then. (once a year maybe)

In the process of updating the BIOS which needed a floppy drive turned out to be a nightmare. My computer doesnt go past the ASUS LOGO SCREEN when started with floppy drive installed. plz look at my other message in the motherboard forum. u can find it by searching on the author name (bubloosolid)
