Asus p4pe Sound (or lack thereof)

Hello again. I have just installed my p4pe mobo with onboard sound (supposedly). I can't get a peep out of the speakers. Can someone offer some suggestions?

I have the S/PDIF module installed as well, but I do not have my speakers plugged into this module's connector because as I saw someone else post, the connection doesn't match up. so, the speaker is plugged into the lime green connection which according to the manual is the Line Out connection. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. It's a little too quiet. : )

one more thing......if I play a sound file and have open the volume control station. The sound level bars do not show up or move as if something is playing at all. Maybe this info will help pinpoint the problem. Thanks.

You installed the drivers for the sound, right? If so, does it show up in the device manager as working?

Are you overclocking the board ? This board has a known strange issues that the sound dies when overclocked to a certain point. I built a rig for my brother and this happened just like you described.

A quick look on asusboards.com gave me the fix. Unlock the pci/agp lock from 33/66 and bump it up to the next higher option. I can't remember what the frequency is off the top of my head but its the next higher.

Worked like a charm. The sound has never disappeared since. They also said if that doesn't work, try the next higher option as well.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not overclocking as far as I know. The processor in the BIOS was set to Manual. I changed it to 2400 Mhz. Which should it be? I originally left it manual, and the sound didn't work. I changed it, and it still doesn't work.

I haven't made any changes to the BIOS other than that. The onboard sound is set to auto in the BIOS settings.

Any mroe suggestions? Thanks for any help.

eh, first off, I don't think you want to set your 2400+ to 2400mhz. Just let it auto detect it, the 2400+ runs at 2000mhz. The most likely reason is that you didn't install the drivers at all/correctly. Goto device manager and find the sound devices, and see if it's installed. If not, goto the mfgs website and download and install the drivers.

thanks for the reply. i set the bios back to where it was. Device manager says that the drivers are installed and that the device is working properly. ????

Intel doesn't use a PR rating brudda, It really is a 2.4ghz CPU

My P4PE's onboard sound dies once I hit 150MHz FSB.

Sucks cos I have to use the Live! that was gonna provide me with 5.1 in my car in that computer.

I had the same problem with my P4PE/L and it's because there's a bug with the PCI/AGP lock, just go in the bios and bump the PCI/AGP up a notch or 2 and it''ll resolve the problem.

Actually the sound dies here when the fsb are over 175 (I got a nice p4 1,8 c1 stepping).

It also seems to work better if you got the agp/pci lock to auto rather than manual.

I tried some more, and it seems like i used a fsb that resulted in a 33.3 mhz pci bus. I tried clocking a little bit more and the cound card dissapeard.

I now upped the pci/agp clock to 34.34 or something like that and agp to 67.xx something. And now it's working again. It's a shame that my memory doesn't like more than 425mhz. And since that doesn't fit with a fsb of 175 mhz I had to run the memory at 350 mhz. I'm using one TwinMos PC3200 512mb, it's windbond chips rated at 5ns.

Im now also using the 1003.b12 bios and I haven't had any big problems yet. (currently running at 175 mhz fsb with most memory settings agressive)
