Asus P4PE question about the IDE port.

This Asus board, has the sATA Promise controller chip which also support one IDE master drive. I wonder if I can just put one drive on it work it as a regular ATA controller or must I use it as a single drive in RAID? I just wonder if I put one drive on it only and no drive on sATA, will the RAID controller put a header on it or will it just work as the ATA drive? I don't want to put my important data on it and later put it in a different board and it does not work b/c the new board does not have the same Promise chip.
Any information would be great.
Thanks.
